Remember when everyone and his dog was telling us how great things would be if we just made pot legal? It could fund all sorts of new government initiatives, along with all sorts of other great benefits.
Is anyone REALLY shocked to find out these promises were full of crap?
We’ve got two news stories that make those pot cheerleaders look really ridiculous.
First, the legal dispensaries aren’t doing so well. With all the regulations, zoning laws, overhead, taxes, HR compliance issues and all the rest that goes into running a government-certified marijuana dispensary, it doesn’t take too many of those bureaucratic papercuts before you find they’ve bled your business model dry.
What’s been happening in California, is that when all is said and done, anyone looking to smoke up is better off asking that buddy with the sketchy friends and connections for help.
Bill Whtitle, Steve Green, and Scott Ott from BillWhittle(dot com) take a run at that story in this video.
Story one is the fun one, because it lets us laugh at bureaucratic stupidity.
Our second one is a lot more somber. It’s an NIH study that looked into whether Medical Marijuana laws, or legalizing marijuana use entirely had any impact on opioid use, specifically among VHA patients.
It did.
And not in a good way.
Here’s the conclusion that comes with the study’s abstract MCL and RCL are areas legalizing medical and recreational use of marijuana, respectively, while OUD describes ‘opioid use disorder’:
The results of this cohort study suggest that MCL and RCL enactment was associated with greater OUD prevalence in VHA patients over time, with the greatest increases among middle-aged and older patients and those with chronic pain. The findings did not support state cannabis legalization as a means of reducing the burden of OUD during the ongoing opioid epidemic.
In plain English?
Legal access to pot has increased the degree to which VHA patients developed dependance on opioids.
