At least eight people are dead in Kentucky due to severe flash flooding occurring across the Bluegrass State and its neighbors on President’s Day weekend.

Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) confirmed that deaths have been reported in Clay, Hart, Nelson, Pike, and Washington counties.

“We believe this number is going to grow. We hope it doesn’t grow quickly or grow much larger,” the governor said during a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Beshear is advising Kentucky residents to stay off the roads. More than 300 roads have been closed across the state amid the massive flooding. 

“Folks, stay off the roads right now and stay alive,” the governor said. “This is the search and rescue phase, and I am very proud of all the Kentuckians that are out there responding, putting their lives on the line.”

Mudslides are a major threat to the eastern part of the state, and snow is making conditions dangerous in the western half, according to Beshear. 

President Donald Trump approved Beshear’s request for an emergency disaster declaration, allowing the state to have access to federal resources.

Hundreds of water rescues have taken place, and two nursing homes have been evacuated due to flooding conditions. 

Flooding is also affecting roadways in Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. 

Officials in Tennessee are calling on residents of Rives, located in the western part of the state, to evacuate after a levee failed along the Obion River, leading to serious flooding in the town and surrounding areas.

“Water rescues are ongoing,” the National Weather Service office in Memphis said on X. “If you are in the area, GET TO HIGHER GROUND NOW! This is a LIFE THREATENING situation.”

Ten West Virginia counties were under a state of emergency due to the heavy rains and flooding.

And Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) said he is deploying the National Guard due to the storm.
