Vice President Kamala Harris‘s Los Angeles neighborhood was among those evacuated as four fires scorched Southern California.

“Last night, the Vice President’s neighborhood in Los Angeles was put under an evacuation order,” Harris spokesman Ernie Apreza wrote on social media. “No one was in her home at the time. She and the Second Gentleman are praying for the safety of their fellow Californians, the heroic first responders, and Secret Service personnel.”

Secret Service personnel are permanently positioned at Harris’s home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

President Joe Biden is also in Los Angeles. His planned speech in Box Canyon, California, on Tuesday about his designation of two new national monuments was rescheduled to next week at the White House because of the fires.

“At the President’s direction, the Biden-Harris Administration has been in constant communication with California Governor [Gavin] Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor [Karen] Bass, their teams, affected counties, and other local officials throughout the night,” the White House told reporters Wednesday. “The President reiterates his call for residents to remain vigilant and heed the warnings of local officials.”

Harris is in Washington, D.C., where she is anticipated to make an appearance Wednesday to sign her ceremonial desk, a vice presidential tradition.

Two people have died, more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed, and more than 80,000 residents have been evacuated as the Palisades Fire, which was ignited Tuesday morning by a backyard fire, has burned almost 3,000 acres. The Eaton and Hurst fires, which ignited Tuesday evening, have affected 2,000 acres and 500 acres, respectively.

A state of emergency remains in place across Los Angeles as a “red flag weather event” of warm, fast winds and humidity hamper firefighting efforts, and traffic jams affect the evacuation counterparts. Schools across the region are closed, and thousands are without power.
