After YouTuber Nick Shirley uncovered massive fraud at Somali-run daycare centers in Minnesota, the Trump administration is taking big action.

The Department of Health and Human Services just announced that they are freezing all payments to child care centers in the state of Minnesota.

In addition, they will be implementing new requirements for child care centers to receive money from the government — not just in Minnesota, but across the nation.

Two HHS officials explained the move in a video shared on X:

We have frozen all child care payments to the state of Minnesota.

You have probably read the serious allegations that the state of Minnesota has funneled millions of taxpayer dollars to fraudulent daycares across Minnesota over the past decade.

Today we have taken three actions against the blatant fraud that appears to be rampant in Minnesota and across the country:

1. I have activated our defend the spend system for all ACF payments. Starting today, all ACF payments across America will require a justification and a receipt or photo evidence before we send money to a state.

2. Alex Adams and I have identified the individuals in @nickshirleyy
‘s excellent work. I have demanded from @GovTimWalz
a comprehensive audit of these centers. This includes attendance records, licenses, complaints, investigations, and inspections.

3. We have launched a dedicated fraud-reporting hotline and email address at https://childcare.gov Whether you are a parent, provider, or member of the general public, we want to hear from you.

We have turned off the money spigot and we are finding the fraud.
@ACFHHS
@HHSGov

This is awesome to hear.

Finally, thanks to a young guy in a hoodie filming with his iPhone camera, we are seeing some concrete action being taken to end the fraud that’s gone on for far too long.

You can call it the Nick Shirley effect!

Speaking of which, Shirley had this to say about the HHS’ actions:

As you might imagine, the only person who isn’t happy about this is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who continues to deny that there’s a problem in the first place.

NBC News shared a statement from his office:

A spokesperson for Gov. Tim Walz, who was the 2024 Democratic nominee for vice president, responded in a statement Tuesday saying the governor “has been combatting fraud for years.”

“Fraud is a serious issue. But this is a transparent attempt to politicize the issue to hurt Minnesotans and defund government programs that help people,” the spokesperson said.
