A Philadelphia-bound American Airlines flight was met by a heavy emergency response at London’s Heathrow Airport after the crew was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to a suspected mechanical issue.

The Boeing 787-9 had just cleared England’s southern coast Monday afternoon when pilots turned the aircraft back toward Heathrow, according to flight trackers.

Photos from the runway showed police cars and fire trucks lined up around the jet as it taxied to a remote stand. Blue lights flashing across the tarmac quickly drew attention online.

“Didn’t get very far before needing to return to London due to stuck flaps,” flight-tracking site Flightradar24 posted on X, adding, “The aircraft returned safely to LHR and taxied to a remote stand.”

Officials later confirmed the Dreamliner landed without incident, though the large emergency presence was a precaution. Reports also circulated that the aircraft may have been overweight when it touched down.

The London Fire Brigade told the Daily Mail its crews did respond, but “no direct action” was required once the plane was on the ground. American Airlines has not yet commented on the scare.

The incident adds to a streak of unsettling events at Heathrow in recent weeks. Over the weekend, a car erupted in flames inside Terminal 3’s parking garage, sending thick black smoke into the sky and forcing firefighters to battle the blaze with four engines and more than two dozen personnel.

Just weeks earlier, Terminal 4 was thrown into chaos after a man allegedly carried a substance believed to be tear gas into the building. The check-in area was evacuated for three hours as more than 20 people reported injuries from what officials later called a “mass hysteria” incident.

Passengers arriving on Monday said the latest scare created tense moments as flashing emergency vehicles surrounded the American Airlines jet. But with the plane safely on the ground and no passengers harmed, Heathrow resumed normal operations shortly afterward.
