SpaceX CEO and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gave his final report and update on the organization and its mission as he is set to step down from his position after 130 days of service. During a special press conference held jointly with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, Musk revealed what his expectations are for the future of the agency.

He reiterated his belief that DOGE will, “over time,” achieve its goal to cut a trillion dollars in wasteful spending in the federal government.

While serving as a “special government employee,” Musk was in charge of making major cuts to the federal workforce to reduce spending. Initially, the Tesla CEO believed DOGE would be able to cut $2 trillion from the budget, but walked that back to $1 trillion later.

According to a report from CNN, he also lowered the total to $150 billion for this fiscal year during a Cabinet meeting held in April 2025. As he reflected on his time as the head of DOGE, he stated that identifying cuts takes “a lot of hard work.”

“It’s just a lot of work going through the vast expenses of the federal government and just really asking questions,” he explained during the press event.

The billionaire also said that he’s going to have a continuing role, but as an adviser, providing President Donald Trump with support when needed.

“I expect to continue to provide advice, whenever the president would like advice,” Musk went on to tell a reporter in answer to a question about what the future holds for him.

Trump responded, “I hope so.”

“I expect to remain a friend and an adviser and certainly, if there’s anything the president wants me to do, I’m at the president’s service,” Musk continued.

The primary goals of DOGE include helping to streamline operations within the federal government and reducing unnecessary expenditures. While Musk was the leader of the agency, it was able to terminate over 10,000 contracts, 15,000 grants, and almost 500 leases, which resulted in a savings of $172 billion.

One of its accomplishments is an initiative that audited unused government-issued credit cards across a total of 32 agencies. This led to the deactivation of 523,000 cards.

DOGE has faced heavy scrutiny, and its aggressive approach has raised the ire of liberals and even some conservatives. Some of its critics have alleged that the agency has overstepped its bounds on numerous occasions, particularly with mass layoffs and dismantling federal agencies.

Musk stepping away from the position has left Americans speculating about who might take his place. One name being bandied about is Russell Vought. However, there are some who question the viability of DOGE without Musk at the helm.
