The Iranian clerics, who’ve been in power since 1979, haven’t learned any lessons from the last few days. In major defiance of reality, they have now chosen Khamenei’s son Mojtaba as Iran’s next Supreme Leader.

Just over a week since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a strike on his compound, his son was tapped by a body of senior officials to be the country’s next supreme leader, according to state media.

A powerful regime insider, deeply intertwined with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is a choice by Iran’s Assembly of Experts that sends a strong message of defiance against President Donald Trump as Iran remains locked in a war with the United States and Israel.

Ali Khamenei, who dominated the country for decades, was killed in an attack in Tehran as the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28.

You’d think that the clerics might’ve gotten a reality check with the Ayatollah and a significant majority of the Iranian leadership getting killed dead over the last week. One would think they’d take a step back and perhaps elect someone who is a moderate.

But nooooo… their hatred of the United States is so strong that they are just going to keep digging all the holes for themselves. Even in light of the fact that U.S. and Israeli forces have decimated Iran’s military.

Iranian F-14 fleet attacked at a base in central Iran believed to host all the remaining F-14s in Iranian service.

Early in the morning on Mar. 8, 2026, the IDF announced that Iranian Air Force F-14 Tomcats at the 8th Tactical Fighter Base in Isfahan (or Esfahan), in central Iran, home to the 81st, 82nd and 83rd Tactical Fighter Squadrons, had been obliterated in an air strike part of the Operation Roaring Lion.

This, along with sinking two Iranian warships is huge news. Why?

The Persian Tomcats are the world’s last operational F-14s, after the main user, the U.S. Navy, retired the type in 2006.

Iran initially ordered 80 examples for the Imperial Iranian Air Force, with 79 being delivered beginning in February 1976. This was before the Shah of Iran was deposed from power in 1979, giving birth to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the aircraft passing in the hands of the current Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF).

There were reports back around 2018-2019 that at least 24 Tomcats were mission capable. If these latest reports hold out, then yes the Iranian military has been decimated.

Obviously the clerics are ignoring reality and choosing their continued hatred of the United States and the western world by picking Mojtaba as the new Supreme Leader.

By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts, appointed Ayatollah Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the assembly said in a statement.

While Mojtaba has been the favored successor of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Trump condemned the likely appointment as “unacceptable” for the US and vowed it would not bring an end to the war.

“Khamenei’s son is a lightweight.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,’’ he said.

Trump insisted nobody will take over Iran unless he’s consulted first, telling ABC News Sunday that a new leader “is not going to last long” without his approval.

Tehran’s new leader will inherit control of the feared IRGC, which has ruled the nation with an iron fist for decades — and a cache of highly enriched uranium that could be used to build a nuclear bomb.

For everyone yammering about how stupid Trump was to back out of the atrocious Obama/Kerry Iran deal, the enriched uranium Iran holds is there BECAUSE of the deal…and all those pallets of cash.

Not only that, but RedState’s Jen Van Laar points out something else regarding Mojtaba and his new role. He’s filthy rich.

Mojtaba Khamenei owns an extensive and troubling real estate portfolio in the U.K., including two luxury apartments in London overlooking the Israeli Embassy and “a stone’s throw” from Kensington Palace, home of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Bloomberg News reported in late January after a year-long investigation. He purchased the apartments in 2014 and, according to the probe, the funds for the purchases came from Iran’s oil program.

In addition, Khamenei “owns 11 mansions in Hampstead, North London, through a front man and a shell company registered in the Isle of Man.” The properties are part of a “global property empire” worth “hundreds of millions of pounds,” according to Bloomberg.

Being able to sell oil to China, Russia and others despite all the sanctions over the years was certainly lucrative for Khamenei. And, if they need any more money to continue …if they can… enriching uranium, all he has to do is sell some property.

What do Iranian citizens think of this move?

He’s even more of a hardliner than his father was. Yet I’m sure there will be glowing write ups about him in the New York Times by tomorrow.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how all this shakes out given there’ve been numerous reports of infighting between the leadership – what’s left of it- and the clerics.

As for the Iranian people, it’s evident they aren’t pleased with this new move from the rabid clerics.
