When President Trump told the Persian people that were being slaughtered en masse by their own government in Iran that ‘Help is on the way’, it opened up a flood of questions about what implications might follow. Some took the slowness of his response as evidence that he was bluffing.

Nobody is thinking that now.

Trump’s commitment to diplomatic means of resolving tensions with Iran — specifically as relates to their nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile projects — was pressed to the point where even some of his allies wondered if Iran was rope-a-doping him to run out the clock. It was common knowledge that Iran had no interest in willingly abandoning its nuclear ambitions, and its hostility to the Great Satan was baked into the regime’s theocratic core beliefs.

What many Westerners quickly forget is that Iran’s regime was installed after a hostile takeover where Islamists and Marxists cooperated with Western powers to topple the Shaw. As a result, a minority of Arab regime leaders have been in control of a country that is comprised by a majority of Persian Iranians. Forty-seven years later, Iranians are calling for their Shaw-in-exile to return. In fact, in the latest wave of protests that began in the New Year, those calls are louder than ever.

There were a few clues this week that the pieces were falling into place for an imminent attack. The full compliment of two Aircraft Carrier deployments have arrived in their respective places in nearby waters. Airspace access has been negotiated with neighboring countries. Ambassador Huckabee gave notice that staff were permitted to evacuate the Embassy in Israel. American forces were removed from several nearby international bases.

Negotiation, which Trump said would go on for 10-15 days in Mid-Febrary was given one last kick at the can on Friday. When that went nowhere, [expletive] got real.

This seems like it might be a relevant announcement by the Secretary of State.

It was followed just a few hours later by another announcement through government channels.

As night owls in America noticed news of air strikes in Iran popping up on their social media feeds, the President gave an address to give proper context to those attacks, taking his time in an 8 minute message to explain what (from his perspective) brought us to this point, what his expectations are, and what a resolution might look like.

It’s pretty clear from his wording that he wants Iran’s theocratic regime to fall, and for the Persian people themselves to rise up and replace them with a government of their own choosing.

If successful, it will deliver freedom to a people that is currently being slaughtered by the tens of thousands (possibly much more) by their own government and is pretty much the opposite of Dubya’s vision of nation-building. Once freed from the leash of the Supreme (mis)Leader, they can rebuild their government according to whatever model they like best.

While it might be counter-intuitive to see Iranian people cheering on American airstrikes against their own country, social media has been thick with such sentiments for a very long time.

Of course, as their leaders whines that they are innocent victims of American aggression, let’s not forget Iranian attempts to assassinate not only Trump, but other US officials with whom they took umbrage. Or their attempts to interfere with US elections in the last two cycles.
