If you’re paying attention, you might sense a theme here — when God wants to shake the planet for His purposes, doesn’t hold up a Norman Rockwell checklist of what his champions should look like.

If this Giant of the faith were to show up in a modern church, do you really think he’d be welcomed like the guy who shows up on sculptures and stained glass windows? Or would he bring out the ‘Church Lady’ in most of us and get that hands-on-hips reaction we see in that bald guy meme?

Since he’s God, and big enough that He can fix their flaws as He moves ahead with His purposes, he doesn’t ASK our opinion of who is good enough to be picked for His purposes.

That’s a good thing, too, because we’d probably pick the villians of scripture more often than not.

Sometimes, the fact that they didn’t ‘earn’ a calling from God by being some kind of wunderkind golden child who got all the star stickers for memorizing verses in Sunday School is a big part of the point HE is trying to get across.

It’s God’s goodness, not OUR goodness that’s supposed to give us the strength we need for the task to which He called us, right?

The guy that God picked out of a place that would eventually become Southern Iraq was not picked because he was better than anyone else, but because he would be a great example of how God can accomplish the impossible with an imperfect — as you will see, deeply imperfect — representative.

If he wasn’t too old, too broken, too flawed, or too tainted to be used of God to create an entire NATION of children, maybe (just maybe) He knows what He’s doing with the call he called YOU to, too.
