A recent Gallup survey shows that the top financial concern for most Americans is the high cost of living, followed by energy costs, the cost of owning or renting a home, and healthcare expenses.

According to Breitbart, 31 percent of respondents to the survey listed the cost of living as their biggest financial concern, up two points from last year’s survey but still well below the 41 percent who ranked it as their top financial worry during 2024–the last year of Joe Biden’s presidency.

The poll asked, “What is the most important financial problem facing your family today?” and charted respondents’ verbatim answers to the open-ended question.

In addition to the high cost of living/inflation, other top answers included energy costs/oil and gas prices, the cost of renting or owning a home, and healthcare costs.

Breitbart reports that concerns over energy prices rose just one point from last year to 13 percent, while worries about the cost of owning or renting a home saw a spike of 10 points from just 3 percent last year.

The number of respondents who identified healthcare costs as their primary financial concern rose just one point from last year to 8 percent in 2026.

Other conditions that merited concern included taxes, the stock market, insufficient income, unemployment, and too much debt.

Gallup reports that 55 percent of those surveyed said price increases have caused financial hardship on either them or their household, with 40 percent describing that hardship as moderate and 15 percent reporting “extreme” hardship.

According to the survey, less than half of Americans say that their financial situation is either excellent or good.

35 percent of the respondents describe their financial well-being as “only fair” with 19 percent ranking their situation as “poor.”

The survey also found that 55 percent said their financial situation is worsening, compared to 34 percent who described it as actively improving.

The findings mirror the growing concern over inflation and prices that other surveys are revealing, including the latest weekly survey from The Economist/YouGov showing that the cost of living is a top issue for Republicans, Democrats and independents alike.
