Former Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) died on Sunday after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

Love’s family announced her death in a post on Love’s X account on Sunday night. The former congresswoman from Utah was 49 years old.

“Love Family: With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” read the post. “She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.”

Ludmya “Mia” Bourdeau was born in 1975 in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrants who fled the country due to political repression. Her mother was a nurse, and her father was a manager for a paint company. She graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in musical theater in 1997. She moved to Utah in 1998.

Love ran for and won an election for city council in Saratoga Springs, Utah, in 2003. She served in the seat until 2009 when she decided to run for mayor. She was elected mayor of Saratoga Springs in the 2009 election and served from Jan. 2010 to Jan 2014. In November 2014, Love won a close race in the election for Utah’s 4th congressional district, becoming the first black woman elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives.

“Many of the naysayers out there said that Utah would never elect a Black, Republican, LDS woman to Congress,” Love said at the time. “Not only did we do it, we were the first to do it.”

Love served in the 114th and 115th Congresses from Jan. 2015 to Jan. 2019. She later worked as a political contributor for CNN and published a book, Qualified: Finding Your Voice, Leading with Character, and Empowering Others, in January 2023.

Love was diagnosed with brain cancer in Feb. 2022 and given a diagnosis of only 10 to 15 months to live, according to reports. In March 2025, Love’s daughter Abigale posted on her mother’s X account that she had stopped responding to treatment.

“Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer,” read the post. “Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing. We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her. I am building an archive of special memories with Mia.”

Love’s family said they would provide details about funeral services in the “days to come” after taking some time as a family.

“We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences,” noted the social media post. “We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.”
