Maybe the ‘Gays for Palestine’ can weigh in on this one.
A soccer match in Seattle has become an unlikely flashpoint in the conflict between two darling causes of the activist left in the past few years.
On one side, you have the folks waving the various editions of the Rainbow Flag.
On the other, you have traditional Islam and Sharia law.
They are heading for a collision course in Seattle.
Seattle, predictably, wanted the FIFA match hosted in their town to sing the praises of their favorite social cause, so they made sure the match they were hosting was dubbed a ‘Pride Match’. Imagine their shock to learn the foreign-born non-white athletes were NOT cheering them for such a ‘stunning and brave’ proclaimation.
Here’s how a news outlet in Ghana reported the controversy:
Long before the World Cup draw, Seattle’s local organising committee had earmarked this date to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion and celebration, dubbing the fixture a “Pride Match.” Local organisers say their goal is to honour Seattle’s diverse communities and champion equality through the global reach of football.
However, according to reports, the football federations of both nations have reacted with strong objections. In a formal letter to FIFA, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) stated it “categorically rejects any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match”, arguing that such celebrations “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values in the region,” where both cultures hold deeply conservative views on gender and sexualityOfficials[sic] in Iran echoed the protest.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, described the Pride branding as “unreasonable and illogical”, asserting on that the match’s timing and alignment with LGBTQ+ celebrations “essentially signals support for a particular group” and should be addressed by FIFA’s leadership. — Pulse
That tension has not lessened since the clash was first reported.
“The Egyptian Football Association explained in the letter that, while FIFA is committed to ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment for all fans, and in order to maintain the spirit of unity and peace, it is necessary to avoid including activities that could provoke cultural and religious sensitivities between fans present from both countries, Egypt and Iran, especially since such activities are culturally and religiously incompatible with the two countries,” the Egyptian Football Association wrote in a statement, according to the BBC.

FIFA is not directly connected to the planned Pride events, which are instead being run by a local organization called Seattle PrideFest. The Seattle group said they chose the June 26 game – before knowing which countries were involved in the match – because it represents a “once-in-a-lifetime moment to showcase and celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities in Washington,” according to the AP.

Local Seattle PrideFest organizers told the outlet that it’s “moving forward as planned with our community programming” and “committed to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect, and dignity that defines our region.” — People
For years now, ClashDaily has claimed as axiomatic the fact that leftist grievance culture is more divisive than unifying. Embedded in the DNA of the left’s strategy of using wedge issues to create a hydra of grievance culture perpetually agitating the electorate to rise up against the traditionalist voter is an ideology that creates a balkanized society that will devour itself.
Whether that is the religious traditionalism of latin catholics pushing back against aggressive secular positions on abortions and innovative sexual agendas, fractions within ‘voting blocks’ (see Somali factions in Minnespolis or antipathy to Jews among a large subset of muslim and arabic people), or even conflict within ‘unified’ groups like BLM factions squabbling over misuse of funds, or old heroes of feminism and/or LGBT issues being pushed out as heretics because they’ve not joined in the current phase of the revolution.
Quite the opposite of the Reagan revolution’s appeal to people who have apsirational goals around shared interests across demographics, the left’s movement tries to focus animosity toward a shared enemy. But not every faction is willing to play by the rules set by the secular left. And some of the cultures the left cynically tries to co-opt is unaware that groups, every bit as cynical and ambitious as they are, might be exploiting them as a means to an end in the same sort of way.
If secularists think Islam can be bullied into normalizing their views on sexual theory, they’ve got another thing coming. The only reason they’ve gotten as far as they did in pressuring Christians is by hijacking Christian principles of humility and loving the outcast as a way of setting fire to any understanding of divine moral absolutes. Islam has no such obligation to even consider deferences to human emotion… let alone bend the knee to them.
