As President Donald Trump pursues trade policies that suit America’s best interests, leaders in other nations are retaliating in a number of ways.
In Canada, for example, some have pushed for a boycott on U.S. travel. But for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, it doesn’t sound like much of a threat.
According to Breitbart, he reacted to the potential loss of Canadian visitors with a quip about the winter sport most closely associated with that country:
Speaking with reporters, DeSantis noted that Florida received 140 million tourist visits in 2024 alone, with only 3.3 million of those coming from Canada. He then took a jab at his northern neighbor for not having won a Stanley Cup in 30 years.
“3.3million visitors from Canada. That’s not much of a boycott, in my book,’ DeSantis said. “Maybe they wanted to get a glimpse of what a Stanley Cup winning hockey team actually looks like.”
As noted by Fox News, no NHL team from Canada has won the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.
Canadian boycotts on U.S. travel and American-made products have sparked similarly derisive responses on social media:
This is exactly what they do in a 3rd world country like Iran to show US manufactured goods boycott.
To me, Canada is a 3rd world country now. You’ve already paid for the bourbon, just causing more harm to your own pocket

Living in a wealthy zip code does not turn you wealthy, being US neighbor, does not make you great.
If you want to make Canada Great Again, you need to get rid of idiotic and corrupt politicians.
I love to see Canada Great and Prosperous, not Weak and Miserable.

National Post also reported on DeSantis’ jab at America’s neighbor to the north:
The state’s official tourism marketing organization clocks the number of Canadians at 3.2 million last year, a 19.8 per cent increase since 2022 and the most by far from anywhere else in the world. The U.K. is closest with 1.1 million in 2024. Domestic travel from within the U.S. accounts for most visitation, registering 91.8 per cent last year.
As a result of the tariff dispute, there are reports of Canadians cancelling trips across the border, including to the Sunshine State, a favourite getaway for families and snowbirds.
According to the U.S. Travel Association, 20.4 million Canadians visited the U.S. in 2024, generating $20.5 billion in spending and supporting 140,000 jobs.
Economic politics aside, DeSantis’ barb might be salt in the wound for some Canadians, particularly those in Alberta, who rallied behind the Edmonton Oilers as they mounted a spirited three-game comeback against the Florida Panthers in last year’s Cup final, only to fall short in Game 7.
Here’s a clip of his remarks:
OMG. RON DESANTIS with the MIC DROP.
