U.S. Attorney Ed Martin is initiating inquiries into senior Democratic lawmakers over comments perceived as potentially threatening President Donald J. Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk. Specifically, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) received inquiry letters from Martin, the top federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C.
Martin’s investigation is focused on public comments made by the two national Democratic lawmakers in public settings. For Garcia, Martin is demanding an explanation for remarks the California Democrat made during a recent CNN appearance. During the interview, Garcia made derogatory remarks regarding Musk and pushed for a more aggressive approach to fighting DOGE, saying, “What the American public want is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight,” Garcia said. “This is an actual fight for democracy.”
In the case of Schumer, Martin is seeking additional details regarding the Senate Democrat leader’s speech during a pro-abortion rally in 2020, during which he threatened consequences for Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. “I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions,” he threatened.
Although Schumer later retracted those remarks on the Senate floor, Martin’s letter requested further clarification, emphasizing that Schumer’s comments were made outside the protective bounds of the U.S. Capitol.
On social media, Garcia responded by accusing President Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) of targeting him for his criticisms. Meanwhile, Schumer’s office has yet to respond to Martin’s multiple inquiries, as noted in the U.S. Attorney’s most recent letter.
Notably, the Democratic Party’s violent and threatening rhetoric appears to have inspired at least two assassination attempts against President Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. The first attempt on Trump’s life resulted in a supporter of the President, Corey Comperatore, being killed by the would-be presidential assassin.
