Broccoli sold at Walmart stores across 20 states has been recalled due to potential listeria contamination.

“Braga Fresh is voluntarily issuing a precautionary advisory of a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat 12oz Marketside Broccoli Florets with best if used by date Dec 10, 2024,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

“This product is past its best if used by date and is no longer in stores, but consumers may have frozen the item for later use. Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not consume and discard the product,” the agency continued.

“This advisory is being initiated due to possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” it added.

From the New York Post:

The products being recalled also have a UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 on the back of the bag and Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on the front.

The broccoli florets were sold at Walmart locations in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington state and Wyoming.

To date, nobody has been confirmed to have contracted listeria as a result of consuming the product.

Listeria contamination had potentially life-threatening effects, particularly for people at heightened risk such as pregnant women, newborns, older adults and those with compromised immune systems.

Per USA TODAY:

Listeria are bacteria that can contaminate foods. When eaten, it can lead to listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, an infection with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those at high-risk for listeria infection are newborns, those who are pregnant, have weakened immune systems, and those aged 65 or older. About 1,600 people get sick from listeria each year and about 260 die, the CDC says.

A deadly listeria outbreak attributed to Boar’s Head cold cuts, specifically its liverwurst, resulted in several deaths this summer. The company issued a recall in July 2024 of all deli products made at their production plant in Jarratt, Virginia after meats made there when sliced at deli meat counters where found to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes bacteria, the CDC said.

The outbreak left 10 dead and 61 sickened (60 were hospitalized) across 19 states, according to the CDC.
