Mason Alexander, a freshman football player for Pittsburgh, was killed in a car accident on Saturday.

Alexander was in his hometown, Fishers, Indiana during the time of the crash.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported that he was in the passenger seat of a 2016 BMW heading south on Florida Road.

The driver of the BMW, while attempting to pass a Toyota, had to swerve off the road to avoid colliding with another vehicle in the northbound lane.

The vehicle Alexander was a passenger in hit a tree and immediately caught fire.

Mason Alexander, a freshman football player for Pittsburgh, was tragically killed Saturday in a car accident that took place in Fishers, Indiana — his hometown.

At the scene, the 18-year-old Alexander was pronounced dead.

Per the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, he was in the passenger seat of a 2016 BMW that was headed south on Florida Road. The vehicle attempted to pass a 2015 Toyota and ended up having to swerve so it could miss colliding with another vehicle that was on the northbound lane. The car ultimately went off the road and hit a tree, which led to it catching on fire.

Alexander was a star cornerback at Fisher, Indiana’s, Hamilton Southeastern High School, which is close to Indianapolis. In the 2025 class, he was an ESPN 300 recruit. Back in December, he committed to Pittsburgh, becoming an early enrollee, about to join the football program for spring practice that begins in March.

The University of Pittsburgh’s head football coach released a statement Sunday announcing the passing of freshman cornerback Mason Alexander following a fatal car crash.

“I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get—the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Pat Narduzzi, University of Pittsburgh’s head football coach said in the statement. “Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing.”

Alexander, 18, was a passenger in a fatal crash on Florida Road, near Southeastern parkway and Interstate 69, around 9 p.m. Saturday in the state of Indiana, according to a press release from the Hamilton County (Ind.) sheriff’s office.
