The Defenders of Democracy crowd are finding themselves in a hole again, at the worst possible time. Is it because we’ve been cutting waste and fraud?

To be honest, the ups and downs of political fundraising have always played a BIG role in US politics… especially on the Democrat side.

As the oft-cited Hemmingway quote about going broke describes the process: “How did you go bankrupt? Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.”

A quick look at how we got here will help us better understand the seriousness of the situation.

How the Dems went broke

Part 1: the Obama/Hillary financial disaster

Remember when the GOP made their big electoral gains in the Obama years, and how Hillary sailed almost unopposed into political power in the DNC? Favor-trading and factions were only part of the issue. Money was a big part too. Obama drained the war chest making sure he stayed in office (leaving the party broke for the 2014 midterms)… financial struggles that gave Hillary and the Clinton money machine the inside (insiders?) track to winning the party’s nomination. And we all know what happens to an institution’s money once Clintons get access to it. (Money laundering and campaign finance fraud allegations here.)

If Trump were inclined to play hardball in his first term the way that Dems did when Biden took over (and frankly, during his first term, too) some of these allegations might have made courtroom drama.

The Trump/Biden years — and the rage-driven rebuild

But the Dems rebuilt their money machine, often taking in far more money than the GOP. That money played a big role in tilting the House and Senate in their favor, even in Red districts where hard-left voting trends were not local values.

In the COVID era, money was shovelled out so fast it could scarcely be spent. And when it came time to claw back COVID spending that had not been needed or spent, Democrats put their foot down in absolute refusal. The full scope of the reasons why were suspected, but hardly understood until years later.

The left bragged that the 2022 Red Wave was barely a ripple as they outspent the GOP by wide margins. When it came out that their second-biggest donor (Sam Bankman Fried) was stealing money from investors to pay for Dems to get elected, they denounced his crime, but showed no interest in returning that stolen property to its rightful owner.

In the middle of the 2024 election cycle, Act Blue was making it easy for foreigners to illegally donate money:

The ActBlue fraud-prevention standards changed in April 2024 and again that September, with the relaxed guidelines allowing between 14 and 28 more fraudulent contributions per month.
Under the updated policy, up to 6.4% of total ActBue donations that should have been rejected for fraud were missed.
The platform had already allowed donors to give money without a card verification value (CVV) for transactions until January 2024 — roughly halfway through the election cycle — and the new standards still instructed ActBlue employees to “look for reasons to accept contributions.” — NYPost, April 2025

Things changed when Trump won

The gravy train coming to an end as the GOP took control of all the levers of power was only one of the reasons Democrat donations plummeted.

You can’t blame it all on the ‘Dems in disarray’ narrative, true as it is, or the complaints that stem from how voters and donors were ALL frozen out of the leadership question — first during the primaries, and then when Kamala was parachuted in.

There were a lot of politically-connected people making money hand over fist by finding creative ways to profit over the illegal immigration crisis. NGOs getting grants to care for people in need. Legal fees. Hotels fully booked as housing. Food delivery. Care packages. Translation services. The opportunities were limited only by your imagination and your ability to lean on political connections.

Kicking some of that back to the Democrats is part of how the game is played. But that game is over.

Then along came DOGE. Have you wondered why there were so many screaming fits trying to block Elon’s access to information about where the government money streams went?

We’ve got evidence from diligent DOGE workers showing just how much of those ‘government programs’ were little more than Democrat slush funds.

In the past we’ve written about the ‘slush fund’ of Planned Parenthood and Teachers Unions recycling dollors (or in-kind donations) keep the cycle going. We suspected that ‘non-profits’ were using tax dollars the same way, but the size, scope, and the brazenness of the project was beyond even our most cynical assumptions.

With federal dollars no longer going to support puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgery, Planned Parenthood will be losing out on a significant income stream.

All of these trends are pointing in one direction for the Democrats: The taxpayer spigot is getting turned off, and the Democrats don’t like it.

Cutting illegal aliens off from aid moneyand arresting politicians caught in corruption will further complicate the situation.
