On Thursday, a suspected cartel smuggler was killed during an officer-involved shooting with Border Patrol.

Allegedly, the suspect crossed the river and attacked a Border Patrol, who then opened fire.

The shooting happened in Starr County, Texas — near the border.

Thankfully, no agents were injured during the shootout.

Bill Melugin of Fox News has the details:

BREAKING: Per multiple border law enforcement sources, a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot & killed a suspected cartel smuggler after he came across the river & allegedly assaulted the agent in Starr County, TX, (Rio Grande Valley) this afternoon. I’m told it happened in Border Patrol’s Rio Grande City area of operation, and the agent is okay.

This is one of the most dangerous areas of the border for cartel activity. We spent many days there during the border crisis. It’s where we repeatedly saw suspected cartel gunmen caught on trail cameras moving through the brush, Border Patrol vehicles hit by gunfire, gunmen standing in broad daylight on the other side of the river, tracer rounds from a M240 machine gun being fired above a TX National Guard post, and shootouts and grenade battles on the Mexican side of the river between different cartel factions.

Currently, Texas Rangers are leading an investigation into the incident.

Texas DPS spokesman Lieutenant Chris Olivarez released an official statement:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

The Texas Department of Public Safety can confirm that the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Border Patrol in Starr County.

During the incident, one suspect was shot and later pronounced deceased at Starr County Memorial Hospital.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No further details are available at this time.

Local news outlet ABC3340 shared sheriff’s office’s statement:

The Starr County Sheriff’s Office said Border Patrol agents were “involved in a struggle prior to the shooting,” which occurred around 5:30 p.m. in Midway near the riverbank.

We’ll keep you updated on any further developments.

Please pray for the safety of our Border Patrol agents and all law enforcement.
