Fox News reports:

Prosecutors said Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela, attacked and killed Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, while she was jogging along trails near Lake Herrick on the University of Georgia campus in Athens the morning of Feb. 22.

“Laken Riley herself has given you all the evidence you need alone to find this man guilty of every single count in this indictment,” prosecutor Sheila Ross said in her closing statement on Wednesday. “She did fight, and it is a direct result of that fight that gives you all the physical evidence you need to convict him.”

“He killed her because she would not let him rape her,” Ross added.

Ibarra, 26, is charged with 10 counts in Riley’s murder and a “peeping Tom” incident on the morning of Feb. 22. Prosecutors argued the peeping Tom incident is related to the attack against Riley, 22, because it happened just over an hour before she was killed and showed Ibarra’s alleged intent to prey on women the morning of Feb. 22.

“The roommate of Laken Riley’s killer just testified during his trial that they went to the Roosevelt Hotel together in September 2023 and received a taxpayer funded flight to Georgia. Your government flew an illegal gang member to Georgia with your money — where he then proceeded to brutally murder an innocent girl. January 20th can’t come soon enough,” Greg Price wrote.

Per Athens Banner-Herald:

The judge heard the final case from the defense on Wednesday morning before closing arguments from it and the prosecution. He made his verdict shortly after the arguments concluded.

Riley’s family became emotional as the verdicts were read, sobbing and wiping tears in the courtroom as each count was read off as guilty.

Haggard made his decision in the bench trial that Ibarra opted for instead of a jury trial. The judge will give his sentencing at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
