What started as a disagreement over electric vehicle subsidies has now erupted into a full-blown war of words between two of the most powerful men in America. In a dramatic and unfiltered post on X Thursday afternoon, Elon Musk accused President Donald Trump of being named in the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files — a stunning claim that sent social media into a frenzy.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,” Musk posted to his 200+ million followers. “That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”

Musk offered no evidence in his post but doubled down minutes later. “Mark this post for the future,” he wrote. “The truth will come out.”

The post marks the lowest point yet in what has become a bitter and public unraveling of the once-close relationship between the SpaceX and Tesla CEO and the 47th president.

The accusation didn’t come out of nowhere. In recent days, Musk has repeatedly torched Trump’s $1.6 trillion “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which slashes EV subsidies and introduces new fees for electric car owners. Musk has labeled the legislation a “disgusting abomination,” accusing the administration of bankrupting the nation while gutting clean energy efforts.

Trump, for his part, has suggested Musk is acting out of self-interest and betrayed him only once his company’s government benefits were on the chopping block. “Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody,” Trump said during a press event earlier Thursday. “All of a sudden, he had a problem — after the EV mandate was cut.”

But Musk quickly hit back, denying he had any advance knowledge of the bill, calling Trump’s comments “false,” and saying the legislation was “passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

The growing rift has left many Republicans stunned. Musk, once viewed as a major asset to Trump’s reelection campaign, is now calling on Congress to “KILL the BILL” and urging his followers to pressure their representatives.

“Call your Senator. Call your Congressman,” Musk wrote earlier this week. “Bankrupting America is NOT ok!”

Trump has responded with threats of his own, warning that he may pull federal contracts and subsidies from Musk’s companies altogether. “The easiest way to save money in our Budget… is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The feud has deeply fractured their shared base of supporters. Some Trump loyalists have labeled Musk a “traitor,” while others suggest the president is lashing out in desperation. Still, the Epstein allegation marks a major escalation.

In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi authorized the initial release of declassified records tied to Jeffrey Epstein’s case. Among the contents were already-circulated materials, including flight logs from Epstein’s infamous private jet and a redacted copy of his contact list. One newly unsealed item, labeled the “Evidence List,” cataloged items seized from Epstein’s various homes—recording devices, photographs, and other sensitive material.

However, the long-anticipated release left many underwhelmed. Observers pointed out that much of the information was already known, and the heavy redactions offered little in the way of fresh details.

Bondi admitted that her office had only been given a small portion of the total material. She has since issued a formal request for the FBI to hand over the rest of the documents. As of June, large portions of the Epstein files remain sealed from public view.

The FBI, for its part, has reiterated its conclusion that Epstein’s death was a suicide. Officials cite “video evidence and other materials” as proof, in an effort to put lingering conspiracy theories to rest.
