Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has thrown his support behind the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

The measure would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and valid identification to cast a ballot.

The Democrat senator said he does not believe it’s “unreasonable” to show an ID to vote.

“Fetterman’s right,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) commented.

More from American Greatness:

Fetterman pointed to states like Wisconsin that have similar protections requiring proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and photo ID at the polls.

He noted that 60% of voters in Wisconsin support such safeguards, despite having elected liberal justice Susan Crawford in 2025 to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

House Republicans plan to vote this week on the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act with national polls showing 83% of Americans support the measure, including 71% of Democrats.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries continued to decry the SAVE America Act as “voter suppression” and accused President Trump and GOP leadership of trying to steal the upcoming midterm elections by nationalizing them.

“Bravo!” Elon Musk commented.

“It’s not a radical idea for regular Americans to show your ID to vote, and absolutely those things are not Jim Crow or anything,” Fetterman said.

“Of course, that’s part of an awful, awful legacy of our nation,” he added.

WHTM noted:

During Jim Crow, some states used measures such as literacy tests, poll taxes, and intimidation to prevent Black Americans from voting.

Fetterman said the act wouldn’t discriminate, but instead ensure non-citizens don’t end up on the voter rolls. Pennsylvania already requires someone to be an American citizen to register to vote.

The state also requires a first-time voter in an election district to show proof of identification, which can be either a photo ID or a non-photo ID. Returning voters generally do not need to provide any identification.

Last month, Fetterman’s Republican counterpart, U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA), called for Republicans to implement voter ID ahead of the midterm election.

“This is the one thing that needs to happen prior to the midterm election,” McCormick said.
