Former President Joe Biden has hired a veteran Democratic Party operative to help repair his reputation and legacy, according to a new report from Politico.
The former presidnet is now working with Chris Meagher, a Biden Administration veteran worked as deputy press secretary and Defense Department spokesperson. He has also worked for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Meagher was a driving force behind Biden’s appearance on ABC’s “The View” Thursday, which was his first live interview since leaving the White House, Politico reported.
The hiring comes at a pivotal time for the former president, as many Democrats have blamed the party’s crushing November election loss on Biden’s refusal to step down until his disastrous debate performance with President Trump last June. Biden ended up endorsing former Vice President Kamala Harris in a chaotic process that defied a behind-the-scenes plot from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and former President Barack Obama to nominate someone else.
Biden is also facing a major hit to his legacy as President Trump appears poised to release the transcripts from his predecessor’s infamous interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was investigating Biden’s handling of classified documents. While Hur opted not to bring charges, he stressed that Biden did likely commit violations but would not be convicted by a jury due to his forgetfulness and obvious lack of cognitive ability.
The Biden Administration released a heavily-edited transcript of the interview last year, though the public has never heard the audio after Biden exercised executive privilege over its release last May.

Kelly Scully, a former special assistant and deputy press secretary to Biden, has served as his lone post-presidency spokesperson, though her tenure is soon coming to an end.
In addition to an expected increase in media appearances, Biden is working on a book and has worked to build out his foundation and presidential library. Many Democrats are wary of Biden’s return to the public eye, however, as the former president has long been known as a gaffe machine even before his mental capacity started to decline.
In his first public address since leaving the White House last month, Biden used an out-dated term to describe African Americans when he recalled the first time he laid eyes on “a group of colored kids.”
“There are a lot of young and dynamic leaders in the Democratic Party who are focused on the path forward, and it’s better we focus on them, instead of an old man trying to convince himself and America he isn’t responsible for Donald Trump’s reelection,” one Democratic Party operative told Politico.
