Mexican authorities have reported they discovered 12 bodies buried in hidden graves in Chihuahua state, near the U.S. border.

Authorities discovered 11 graves the contained 12 skeletons during a tracking operations that took place on December 18.

The state prosecutor’s office shared, “The unidentified skeletons and evidence were transferred to the laboratories of the Forensic Medical Service.”

The cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Mexican authorities have discovered 12 bodies buried in clandestine graves in Mexico’s northern Chihuahua state, officials said Thursday.

Authorities discovered 11 graves containing 12 skeletons in Ascension municipality near the U.S. border, the state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“The discovery was made during tracking operations that took place on December 18, 19 and 20,” it said.

“The unidentified skeletons and evidence were transferred to the laboratories of the Forensic Medical Service” in the city of Ciudad Juarez for possible identification and to determine possible causes of death, it said.

Drug cartels and kidnapping gangs in Mexico often use such clandestine body dumping grounds to get rid of the corpses of their victims or rivals, The Associated Press points out. That has contributed to the enormous problem of missing people in Mexico — about 120,000 at this time.

At least 12 bodies were found in several clandestine graves in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, bordering the United States, local authorities said Thursday.

The discovery occurred in a spot in the municipality of Ascensión, located about two hours from the border town of Ciudad Juarez, where 11 graves were found and which 12 skeletons were extracted, the Chihuahua prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“The discovery was made during tracking operations that took place on December 18, 19 and 20,” the agency said.

The prosecutor’s office explained that during those days, government agents were located the various clandestine graves in the area by expanding the search perimeter.

“The undetermined skeletons and evidence were transferred to the laboratories of the Forensic Medical Service” in Ciudad Juarez, it added.
