West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said that the two West Virginia National Guard members shot Wednesday in Washington, D.C. passed away from their injuries.

“It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC have passed away from their injuries. These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues,” Morrisey said.

“Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act,” he added.

The shooting reportedly happened just blocks from the White House.

However, the Republican governor said minutes later that he is receiving “conflicting reports” about the condition of the National Guard members.

“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Morrisey said.

“Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community,” he added.

More from the Associated Press:

Law enforcement was reviewing surveillance video from the scene and believed the suspect approached the soldiers and pulled out a gun, said another law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

At least one of the soldiers exchanged gunfire with the shooter, the official said. Investigators were trying to determine the gunman’s motive, including whether the suspect was targeting the troops for any specific reason, the official said.

The shooting happened roughly two blocks northwest of the White House.

Social media video shared in the immediate aftermath showed first responders attempting CPR on one of the soldiers and treating the other on a glass-covered sidewalk. Other officers could be seen steps away restraining an individual on the ground.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the two West Virginia National Guardsmen wounded in a shooting Wednesday near the White House remain in critical condition, correcting an earlier report from Gov. Patrick Morrisey that the pair had died.

Jeffery Carroll, executive assistant chief of specialized operations at the Metropolitan Police Department, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed during a news conference the attack was targeted, noting the alleged gunman “immediately” opened fire at the service members.

The armed Guardsmen were on high visibility patrols near 17th and High Street NW when the suspect came around the corner, raised his arm with a gun, and shot at the National Guard members, according to Carroll.

Other Guardsmen in the area heard the gunshots and were able to subdue the suspect and take him into custody, officials said.

The alleged gunman, who has not yet been identified, was also shot and taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to Carroll.
