Politicians and pundits from across the political spectrum have spent days analyzing the feud between President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

But few, if any, have experienced the president’s reaction more directly than U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

As he explained in a recent episode of his podcast, Cruz was with Trump when Musk began releasing a string of social media attacks last week.

According to the New York Post:

“I was sitting in the Oval as this unfolded. Trump was pissed. He was venting,” the Republican senator revealed on his podcast “Verdict with Ted Cruz” Friday.

“I was sitting there, and the tweets were coming…. Elon was saying some really harsh things.”

The SpaceX and Tesla billionaire went on a multi-day social media offensive against Trump, panning the president’s “big, beautiful” reconciliation bill “disgusting” and urging Congress to kill it.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk fumed after Trump spoke out about the simmering feud.

Cruz, who’s friends with both former bros, called their very public break-up this week “incredibly painful.”

“These are two men whom I know very well, they’re both good friends of mine,” he said.

While the war of words appears to have cooled somewhat in recent days, it remains a popular topic of social media discussion:

As for reports of a possible reconciliation, Trump seemed to pour cold water on the idea recently, per Fox News:

President Donald Trump told Fox News on Friday that he isn’t interested in talking to SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, adding that “Elon’s totally lost it.”

Trump also said to Fox News’ Bret Baier that he isn’t worried about Musk’s suggestion to form a new political party, citing favorable polls and strong support from Republicans on Capitol Hill.

The comments come as Musk and Trump have been arguing over social media in recent days.

Here’s what Musk’s father had to say about the developing story:
