Legendary rock drummer and songwriter Phil Collins issued a tragic health update over the weekend, stating that he believes his music career is over as he battles severe health issues.

Collins, who served as the drummer and later lead singer for Genesis before becoming one of the most successful solo artists of the 1980’s, revealed that he is no longer “hungry” to write music or perform live in a new interview with Mojo.

Back in 2022, the “In The Air Tonight” singer revealed that he could no longer play the drums because it was too difficult to pick up his drumsticks. Now, Collins is sadly revealing that his health has not improved much at all over the last two year, and he told the outlet that he still wishes to write new music and perform, though he is physically unable to do so.

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick. I mean very sick,” Collins told Mojo.

His last original work came in 2002 as part of his solo album, “Testify.” In 2010, he released “Going Back,” which consisted of covers from Motown, but he has not released any material since.

Collins joined Genesis when the band went on tour in 2022. He sat in a chair to sing a number of the group’s hits while his son, Nic, played the drums. During the last performance of the tour, Collins announced that it would be the last performance for Genesis.

“Tonight is a very special night. Of course, we’re playing in London. It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” he said during the show. “It’s difficult for us to believe that you still came out to see it. I guess after tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”

In December, Collins dished on his health struggles and inability to play the drums in the “Phil Collins: Drummer First” documentary. “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit. I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” Collins said in the documentary, which was filmed in 2022.

The rock star, who first started playing the drums in his early childhood, believes a lifetime of songwriting and performing has “taken a toll” on his hands and legs. “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

Collins has long kept the extent of his health issues to himself, though in a 2017 Facebook post, he revealed that he suffered from drop foot “as a result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk.” According to the Mayo Clinic, drop foot, or foot drop, “is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk. Foot drop isn’t a disease. Rather, it is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem.”

In 2007, Collins suffered a spine injury that left him with nerve damage. “My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in,” the Genesis founding member told the Daily Mail in 2019. “It comes from years of playing. I can’t even hold the sticks properly without it being painful, I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through,” he added.

As a solo artist, Collins had seven U.S. number one singles, with “In The Air Tonight” remaining his most popular release over the years. In addition to his music career, Collins is a major history buff and has a particular interest in The Alamo. He recently made his extensive collection of Alamo artifacts available to be viewed at the battlefield’s museum in San Antonio, Texas.
