The singing of the Star Spangled Banner ahead of the pivotal 4 Nations hockey tournament final between Team Canada and Team USA is being hailed as one of the best renditions in recent memory, as American fans could be heard belting out the lyrics for the entirety of the performance.
During the pregame face-off, the Boston crowd booed each of the Canadian national team’s starters when they were announced. Even hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who was on-hand to serve as honorary captain for Team Canada, was unable to escape the chorus of boos, the loudest of which were reserved for Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.
When it came time for the Canadian national anthem, there were some boos heard from the crowd, though the reaction was considerably less hostile than that of Canadian fans during the previous game between the two nations. The boos initially subsided as American fans opted to take the high road by signing along to “O Canada”
Upon conclusion of the visiting anthem, however, the American crowd erupted into chants of “USA, USA” ahead of the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner.” The U.S. national anthem — which was performed along with a full band — was widely praised on social media. Fans at the sold out TD Garden Arena could be heard belting out the anthem throughout its entirety before again erupting into “USA” chants.
“One of the coolest moments I’ve ever witnessed. The ENTIRE arena sang the US National Anthem in unison. The ending is impossible to describe,” Outback contributor Dan Zaksheske, who was in attendance for the game, wrote in an X post.
“Absolute goosebumps watching the National Anthem in TD Garden tonight,” added the popular Johnny MAGA X account. “America is back.”
Team USA clinched their ticket to championship with a thrilling, 3-1 win in Canada during the tournament’s group stage. After Canadian fans showered the American team and the national anthem with boos, the two teams faced off in three separate fights across the first nine seconds of game time. Team USA ultimately scored three unanswered goals after Canada took an early lead.
Thursday’s final did not get off to the same aggressive start, as Team Canada opted to deploy their best players on the first line. Team USA will need to replicate their game one performance in order to secure the championship, as Canada once again took a 1-0 lead with a first period goal.
Earlier in the day, President Trump called the national team in order to wish them well ahead of the pivotal clash. “I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” the president wrote, repeating a joke he has continuously lobbed at Canada’s left-wing government amidst tariff and border disputes.
“I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting!”
