San Antonio City Council once again failed to allocate taxpayer funds for abortion travel. Despite pressure from liberal council members, city health officials voted in January against allotting $100,000 for pregnant women’s flights, hotel rooms, and food for abortion appointments. While rejecting this proposal is a positive outcome, the broader issue of liberal cities funding abortion-related travel continues.
Last year, the City of San Antonio approved $500,000 in taxpayer funds for the Reproductive Justice Fund (RJF). City officials intended to give grants to organizations that send pregnant women and teens to other states for abortions. Some groups even facilitate illegal chemical abortions in Texas. Texas Right to Life and other Pro-Life groups immediately took action, suing the city to stop this evil use of taxpayer dollars.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, along with other council members, issued a memo stating that the city is “committed to ensuring that the City of San Antonio upholds the initial intent of the Reproductive Justice Fund…” Councilwoman Havrda stated that the city “failed to fulfill the original intent of the Reproductive Justice Fund” by not allowing the funds to be used for abortion travel. The Community Health Committee later voted on the proposal, with two council members in favor, one abstaining, and one voting against it. The council member who opposed the proposal argued that taxpayer money should not be used for abortion travel and that funding should instead come from pro-abortion organizations.
Although San Antonio has not yet spent taxpayer money on abortion expenses, Austin, on the other hand, gave $400,000 to abortion groups last year. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit to prevent taxpayers from being forced to fund abortion travel, but the case is ongoing. Without clarity from the Legislature, we can expect other liberal cities to follow the lead of Austin and San Antonio.
The abortion industry is now relying on abortion travel and mail-order abortion pills to kill preborn Texans. According to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), around 15,000 Texans traveled out of state to obtain abortions in 2023, the first full year following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, an estimated 19,000 abortion pills were mailed to Texas this past year.
We are pleased that San Antonio has once again delayed allocating resident tax dollars toward abortion travel. However, the Texas Legislature must pass additional measures to stop the continued funding of abortion costs in Austin and prevent other liberal cities from following suit. The Stop Tax-Funded Abortion Travel Act will directly target liberal cities and prevent them from using taxpayer money to end the lives of preborn Texans (Senate Bill 730 by Campbell and House Bill 1806 by Noble).Texas must not back down from the fight for Life. Join us by calling your state legislators and urging them to prioritize protecting preborn children and their mothers.
