President Donald Trump has made good on his promise to enforce the Hyde Amendment and limits on taxpayer-funded abortions.
Following his executive order and confirmation of pro-life Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Department of Defense has issued a memo overturning Biden’s abortion travel policy that funded travel for military personnel to leave pro-life states and head to states where abortions are legal for the purpose of ending the life of their unborn child.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, an Alabama Republican, had been leading the fight against the pro-abortion Biden policy and he confirmed to TownHall today that it has bene reversed.

“The update, which was announced in a Defense Travel Management Office memo, removes paragraph 033013 from the Pentagon’s Joint Travel Regulations,” TownHall reported.
Tuberville said Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “affirmed” what he had been fighting for all along: that taxpayer money should not go toward abortions.
“For the past two years, I have been sounding the alarm about the Pentagon’s illegal and immoral practice of using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions,” he said in a statement. “I took a lot of heat when I stood alone for nearly a year in holding senior Pentagon promotions over this—but as of today, it was all worth it. The Biden administration treated taxpayers like their own personal Piggy bank that they could use to bankroll their woke agenda. President Trump and Secretary Hegseth affirmed today what I’ve been fighting for since I got to Washington: zero taxpayer dollars should go towards abortions. Under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth’s leadership, the Pentagon will once again be focused on lethality, not pushing a political agenda. Thank God common sense has been restored to our military under President Trump’s leadership.”
When Biden announced the new policy to make Americans fund abortion tourism, Senator Tommy Tuberville made the decision to block all military nominations until the policy was reversed. Instead of reversing the policy, the Biden administration continued forcing Americans to fund abortion.
While Biden and the media claimed Tuberville is to blame for the lack of approved military nominees, Democrats could have approved the nominees one at a time. – because all Tuberville is doing is blocking a vote on all of them at the same time. Senate Democrats could bring up the nominations – and approve the two nominees today if they really wanted to do so.
Tuberville eventually backed down when he realized Biden would never reverse the policy and he didn’t want to hurt military efforts.
The Biden policy required taxpayers to fund travel costs and paid time off for military service members and their families to abort their unborn babies in elective abortions. As a result, Republican leaders estimate 4,100 more unborn babies could be killed in abortions every year.
In response, House Republicans succeeded in passing the Jackson-Roy amendment to the NDAA.
The House voted 221-213 and 222-210 in favor of amendments to the NDAA to ban the Pentagon from paying for expenses related to killing unborn babies and from funding gender transition procedures The Senate never adopted the language.
Federal law (10 U.S.C. § 1093) has long prevented the Department of Defense (DOD) from using funds to perform elective abortions and prevented the DOD from using its facilities to provide abortions. On October 20, 2022, the Biden Administration’s DOD published a memorandum directing the DOD to pay the travel and transportation costs for military members and dependents who travel to obtain elective abortions.
Polls consistently show strong public opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions. A new Marist poll found 60 percent of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in the U.S. Additionally, 78 percent oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in other countries.
