Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during an interview over the weekend that it was deeply disturbing how leftists have praised the man who was charged with murdering a health insurance CEO on the streets of New York City earlier this month.

Mayorkas made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” with Margaret Brennan.

“Manhattan prosecutors called it a killing that was intended to evoke terror. Would you consider him a terrorist?” Brennan asked. “Is this domestic violent extremism?”

Mayorkas responded: “The rhetoric on social media following that – that murder is extraordinarily alarming. It speaks of what is really bubbling here in this country. And, unfortunately, we see that manifested in violence, the domestic violent extremism that exists. The threat of it in the United States is one of the great threat streams that we must counter.”

He said that a lot of hateful rhetoric on social media was becoming an increasing area of concern for law enforcement officials.

“And the language of violence accompanying or being a part of those narratives is something that we’re very concerned about that. That is a heightened threat environment,” he said. “I still am alarmed, though, by the heroism that is being attributed to an alleged murderer of a father of two children on the streets in New York City.”
