One of the skills that makes Trump so different from ordinary politicians is that he’s always looking at the world through a negotiator’s lenses. You want something, I want something. How can we both walk away happy?

And one of the things he enjoys most is negotiating trade deals.

Relations between Mexico and Canadian provinces have soured since the last deal was struck, and the provincial leaders (Premiers) are coming together to demand Canada pulls out of the deal that was struck with Mexico… partly because China has been exploiting access to Mexican markets to the detriment of Mexico’s free trade partners.

Since ending THAT deal will require it to be replaced with another one, or at least have details renegotiated, that sets up Trump for not just one but TWO wins. He can negotiate from a position of strength (including Trump’s unilateral tariff powers) to maximize American benefits in deals first with Canada (including their natural resources), AND it gives Trump latitude to build in noncompliance penalties if they facilitate easy passage through Mexico en route to America.

If he’s paying attention to what’s unfolding in Canada, Trump will already hve his team putting plans in place to make the best use of these developments.
