Here are the top stories for 2024.
- The Presidential Election. Old Joe Biden decides to drop out of the race following a poor performance in a debate with the Donald. Kamala Harris takes his place, promising to bring hope and joy to America, but no solutions to America’s problems. Meanwhile, Trump was convicted in a hush money case (which could be overturned) and two assassination attempts were made on his life. In the end, Trump defeated Harris in this year’s presidential election, winning both the popular vote and the electoral vote. Meanwhile, Republicans won a majority of the seats in the Senate while maintaining control of the House.
- The fighting between Israel and Hamas continued in the Gaza, with Israel gaining the upper hand. Israel has also imposed significant on Hezbollah. Despite the fact that Hamas is to blame, anti-Israeli (and hence Anti-Semitic) protests have erupted on American college campuses (and other places throughout the world for that matter). Meanwhile, the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria has been overthrown, depriving Russia and Iran of an ally but also resulting in Islamists replacing Assad. It should also be noted that Iran appears to be crumbling from within (i.e. protests, economic turmoil) while trying to spread its Islamic revolution.
- A trio of senseless killings took place towards the end of this year. First there was the shooting of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione. Next there was the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, which was carried out by Natalie Rupnow. Then there was the case of Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, an illegal immigrant who set fire to a woman on fire while she was sleeping on the New York City subway and watched as she burned to death.
- Several mysterious drones were spotted at various locations across the United States. Who or what launched them is still being disputed. Theories range from private citizens to foreign adversaries to UFOs.
- Caitlin Clark became the all-time leading scorer in women’s college basketball in February. Then on March 3, she became the all-time in both men’s and women’s college basketball when she broke Pistol Pete’s record. Clark led Iowa to the national championship game but lost to undefeated South Carolina. She was drafted by the Indiana Fever of the WNBA, and later she became the league’s Rookie of the Year.
- The following people died this year: Carl Weathers, Toby Keith, Richard Lewis, M. Emmet Walsh, Joe Lieberman, Louis “Lou” Gossett Jr., Joe Flaherty, O. J. Simpson, Dabney Coleman, Jerry West, Willie Mays, Donald Sutherland, Martin Mull, Jim Inhofe, Shelley Duvall, Shannen Doherty, Richard Simmons, Bob Newhart, Wally Amos, Phi Donahue, John Amos, Sid Eudy, James Earl Jones, Jonathan Wells, John Ashton, Maggie Smith, Kris Kristofferson, Dikembe Mutombo, Pete Rose, Greg Landry, Philip Zimbardo, Michael Newman, Teri Garr, Gerry Faust, John Robinson, Jim Abrahams, Rickey Henderson, Greg Gumbel, and Jimmy Carter.
May everyone have a Happy New Year.
