To his credit, leftist comedian Bill Maher was willing to at least sit down with President Donald Trump.

After the recent meeting, Maher also shared a glowing review with his HBO audience, prompting even more backlash from his own side of the aisle.

Among the most vocal critics was “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David, who penned an op-ed comparing Maher’s trip to the White House to a dinner with Adolf Hitler.

In a subsequent interview, Maher managed to put things in perspective while tearing down the argument of David and others who constantly compare Trump to the reviled Nazi leader.

As the Daily Caller reported:

“First of all, it’s kind of insulting to six million dead Jews,” Maher said. “It’s an argument you kind of lost just to start it. Look, maybe it’s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the GOAT of evil. We’re just going to have to leave it like that.”

Maher took fire from liberals for having dinner with Trump, with former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann accusing the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host of “prostituting himself.”

“This wasn’t my favorite moment of our friendship. I think the minute you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve lost the argument,” Maher said, with Morgan agreeing. “Come on, man. Hitler, Nazis — nobody has been harder, and more prescient I must say, about Donald Trump than me. I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. The fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either.”
David’s over-the-top comparison sparked a flurry of disapproval on social media:

NEW: Scott Jennings says Larry David’s attack on Bill Maher wasn’t about dinner—it was the modern left threatening the next person into silence.

Larry David just dropped a venom-laced op-ed in the New York Times titled “My Dinner With Adolf,” unleashing on Bill Maher for one thing: having dinner with President Donald Trump.

But as @ScottJenningsKY pointed out, this wasn’t really about Maher at all.

It was the modern left doing what it does best—weaponizing public shame to keep others in line.

“The message of this is not to——because Bill Maher, first of all, I totally agree. He’s totally in the right to do it,” Jennings said.

“And I loved his monologue, even though I disagree with most everything he believes politically, he was right to do this and he was right to speak out about it.”

Then he exposed the real playbook.

“But this isn’t about that dinner. It’s about the next one. Because this is the modern left. It’s an attempt always to intimidate people into not ever doing it again.”

“It’s to silence yourselves or we’ll do it for you. That’s the purpose of this op ed, so that the next comedian or the next person on the American left chooses not to speak to Donald Trump.”

“This is all an effort to get people not to do what you just said, which is to talk to each other and our political leaders.”

This is how the modern left enforces obedience: torch one person in public—so no one else dares step out of line.
Fox News also reported on the back-and-forth between Maher and David:

Maher said he hasn’t spoken with David since the op-ed was published but insisted he “can be” friends with him despite their disagreement.

“I can take a shot, and I also can absolutely take it when people disagree with me,” Maher said. “You know, that’s not exactly the way I would have done it… if I could talk to Trump, I could talk to Larry David, too. You know, I could talk to anybody.”

Representatives for David did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.
