President Trump threatened to cut all government subsidies to General Motors following an announcement that the car manufacturer was planning to lay off American workers and close plants.
General Motors comes to a sputtering halt
The iconic car producer announced that it is laying off nearly 15,000 workers.

GM will also be shuttering a number of plants and will cease producing particular car models:
GM said it would shut operations at plants in Detroit; Oshawa, Ontario; Warren, Ohio; White Marsh, Maryland; and Warren, Michigan. The plants made sedans that have waned in popularity, including the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Cruze, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6 and XTS. GM said it will no longer make those cars.
Where other presidents would simply lie down and let American companies take their business overseas, Trump acts. Here's what he tweeted in response to the news:
Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. Nothing being closed in Mexico & China. The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including….

….for electric cars. General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) – don't think that bet is going to pay off. I am here to protect America's Workers!

White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow confirmed that the Administration is looking into pulling the plug on subsidies:

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed this afternoon that there isn't a timeline in place or more details on Trump's threat:

GM will no longer make Obama's favorite car
General Motors' announcement is particularly ironic given how much effort the Obama administration put into propping it up. Remember the old Obama 2012 slogan “Bin Laden is dead, General Motors is alive”?
And remember: Obama was a huge promoter of the Chevy Volt, an electric car that was supposed to revolutionize how cars were fueled. GM will no longer produce the car.
President Obama relentlessly promoted the Chevy Volt, promising to buy one when he left office (he didn't)
He also autographed a Chevy Cruz describing is as “the car of the future”
GM announced today they will end production for both cars in 2019 pic.twitter.com/qqgR3YdVWW

Looks like Obama was about as good at business as he was at governing: that is, not good at all. That's what you get when you have a community organizer trying to shove his environmental beliefs down everyone's throats.
One of Trump's biggest campaign promises was that he would protect domestic manufacturing. He's not going to let GM lay off American workers without repercussions. We just have to wait and see what form that punishment will take.
