Donald Trump is the first president not to have a pet dog in the White House in well over a century.
When the president held a rally in El Paso, Texas, Monday night, he talked about why.
“I wouldn't mind having one, honestly, but I don't have any time,” Trump said. “How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn? Would that be right? It doesn't.”
“It feels a little phony to me,” Trump added.

Trump continued, “A lot of people say, ‘Oh, you should get a dog.' Why? ‘It's good politically.'”
“Look, that's not the relationship I have with my people,” Trump said.
At that point, someone in the crowd yelled out that Obama had a dog in the White House.
“Yeah! Obama had a dog. You are right,” Trump said. The crowd laughed.

While President Trump didn't seem warm to the idea of having a pet dog during his rally Monday, he did mention his dog preference: German Shepherds. Particularly police drug dogs.
“They are unbelievable. They'll run past all these empty boxes, and one of the boxes has drugs in it, deep down in a box. And it comes to a screeching halt barking at it every time,” Trump said.
How do German Shepherds compare to expensive machines built to detect drugs? The President had some opinions on this as well.
“I asked the people that sell the machinery – and a lot of money – I say, ‘Let me ask you a question. This stuff is incredible. I'm really impressed. How does it compare to a German Shepherd?'” Trump said.
“The guy looks at me and goes, ‘Sir, honestly, it's not as good.' Can you believe it? German Shepherds. Certain types of dogs.”
So, at least we know what kind of dog President Trump admires, even though he's the first president in a very long time not to have a furry friend around.
It's worth noting that before Obama, President George W. Bush also had a dog, Miss Beazley.
