A teen was shot in downtown Washington D.C. on Monday afternoon.

The teen whose identity has not been released, was shot near the Washington Mall and after being shot ran inside of a building to receive help.

As police and medical crews arrived to the scene the provided medical attention to the teen and transported him to a nearby hospital.

The suspect of the shooting shot the victim multiple times and one of the bullets fired struck the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum.

NBC Washington reported from the scene of the shooting:

A young shooting victim ran into a building near the National Mall for help Friday afternoon, with a bullet hole seen in a window at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum in the aftermath.

First responders were called to the 600 block of Maryland Avenue SW about 1:30 p.m., where they found an “older juvenile” with a gunshot wound, according to D.C. police.

Police said two young people got into a dispute and one of them opened fire, shooting the teen multiple times in his arms and legs.

The victim ran into a building in that block for help. The location is just south of the National Mall, and additional police from other federal agencies also responded to the scene and cordoned off the area.

One bullet pierced a window at the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, leaving a hole visible. No one at the museum was injured.

The museum’s Independence Avenue entrance is closed, a museum spokesperson said about 2 p.m. That entrance is about half a block from where the teen was shot.

At least one other bullet struck a van, shattering some of its windows. Tourists from Spain had been riding in the van but had gotten out for lunch at the time of the shooting.

The teen victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said. His exact age was not available.

Police are investigating the shooting. They found a number of shell casings outside a nearby Holiday Inn.

ABC 7 News reported the victim was walking home from school:

A 17-year-old boy was shot Friday afternoon as he was heading home from Richard Wright Public Charter School, according to police and the school’s founder.

The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. in the 200 block of 6th Street, Southwest.

The boy who was shot is expected to survive, according to police. Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Tom Lynch confirmed to 7News that the teen knew who the shooter and they were walking together when the shooting happened.

Other bullets struck the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall, shattering the glass.

The charter school utilizes a safe passage “Man the Block Plan” that staggers dismissals into smaller groups of students and lines the block with staff members to make their walks home safer.

The school’s founder and CEO, Dr. Marco Clark, said that “at approximately 1:50 p.m. today, students from Richard Wright Schools were being dismissed in small groups in accordance to the school’s safe passage Man the Block Plan. All staff members were on their posts and in position as the students were released.”
