Sunday Thoughts: Is the Earth Flat?

Are there true mysteries of the universe that demonstrate that the Earth is flat and that Round Earth doctrine is little more than an elaborate hoax? Did you realize this? Nearly 16% of the U.S. population still have doubts about this Round Earth doctrine.

The story goes that there is no flat Earth conspiracy per se. NASA is not hiding the shape of the earth from anyone. The purpose of NASA is not to “hide the shape of the earth.” However, there is a space travel conspiracy. The purpose of NASA is to fake the concept of space travel to further America’s militaristic dominance of space. That was the purpose of NASA’s creation from the very start: To put ICBMs and other weapons into space (or at least appear to). The motto “Scientific exploration of new frontiers for all mankind” was nothing more than a front. The conspiracy plot thickens.

See this remark made in 1958 by Senate Majority Leader and later President Lyndon Johnson:

“Control of space means control of the world. From space, the masters of infinity would have the power to control the earth’s weather, to cause drought and flood, to change the tides and raise the levels of the sea, to divert the gulf stream and change temperate climates to frigid. There is something more important than the ultimate weapon. And that’s the ultimate position. The position of total control over the Earth that lies somewhere in outer space.”

Ah-hah! These government people are always hiding things from the public. But is it just a conspiracy, or are there real scientific reasons to believe in the flat Earth? Here are a few “scientific” arguments that some say prove the flat Earth concept, but there are many more:

  • Gravity is an illusion, caused by the disk of the earth flying upwards and accelerating at 32 feet per second squared, keeping us all pinned to the ground.
  • Building on the curved surface on a spherical Earth should mean that it’s pretty well impossible to build anything in a straight line without accounting for the curvature.
  • Heliocentrism is that the stars do not appear to shift in position in the sky in relation to the Earth’s movement around the sun. Time-lapse photography of the night sky, simply shows the stars moving in circles around Polaris.
  • The stars don’t move in one night. Also, The stars move when you do.
  • The horizon Is flat. The slight curvature you see is the rounding of the disk.
Do these “scientific assertions” sound reasonable? There are more arguments and solutions that can be found at the Flat Earth Society. Here is a link that tries to debunk these flat-Earth theories above.

There are a lot of famous people that believe in the flat Earth. NBA star Kyrie Irving made headlines when he revealed that he believes that the world was flat, and surprisingly he’s not the only famous person who doesn’t believe the globe is … well, a globe. There are others; Tila Tequila, B.o.B., George Bernard Shaw, Sherri Shepherd, and Thomas Dolby, just to name a few. You may say those famous people shouldn’t be taken credibly. Well, when it comes to the politics of science we do, why not flat Earth science?

Copernican heliocentrism is the name given to the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus and published in 1543. This model positioned the sun near the center of the universe, motionless, with Earth (a sphere) and the other planets orbiting around it in circular paths, modified by epicycles, and at uniform speeds. Of course, famously, this view got him in trouble with church authorities who believed that the Earth was the center of the universe.

Remember when early oceanic explores were afraid to venture out too far into the sea, lest they would fall off the edge of the world or be eaten by sea monsters? Galileo enlarged on Copernicus’ ideas and offered scientific observations as proof of the theory. Galileo was forced by the Church to recant his statements. Perhaps if Galileo and Copernicus understood more about the Bible, they could have fought those same authorities with their own Biblical texts.

The first line of Isaiah 40:22 reads, “It is he [i.e., God] who sits above the circle of the earth.” Some have argued from this that Scripture teaches the earth to be a flat disc rather than a globe. However, even if the original Hebrew is correctly understood to refer to a circle, this doesn’t necessarily indicate something flat. The Hebrew word in question for a circle is khûg (חוּג) which is also found in Job 22:14 where, in many Bible versions, it is translated “vault” – arched structure, implying 3D dimensions. In Job 26:7, probably written several centuries before Isaiah, states that God “hangs the earth on nothing,” indicating that the ancient Hebrews had quite a sophisticated understanding of cosmology.

Yes, Biblical Cosmetology is a thing. But like many things in the Bible, people are quick to spin the text to their own opinion. Please give us your assessment on what your Biblical cosmology says – or maybe you are one of the 16% that believes the Earth really may be flat based on science.
