Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and several other GOP lawmakers are pushing legislation to prohibit spending federal funds on the special presidential envoy for climate, a role occupied by John Kerry.

"Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be used for the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, including for salary, administrative, and travel expenses of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and for any other activity of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate," the text of the bill reads.

Eight GOP lawmakers cosponsored the "No Taxpayer Funding For Climate Zealots Advancing Radical Schemes Act": Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Mary Miller of Illinois, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Andy Biggs of Arizona, and Greg Steube of Florida.

"Hardworking Americans are struggling every day to afford gas and electricity because of the disastrous energy policies peddled by hysterical fools like John Kerry," Roy said, according to a press release. "If we're going to fight for energy freedom in this country, we have to defund climate tyrants like John Kerry; my bill would do just that."

John Kerry has been pushing climate alarmism, even as Americans suffer under the financial strain caused by high gas prices — as of Thursday, the AAA national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $5.009.

Kerry said last week that "energy security worry is driving" the thinking that there is a need for additional drilling and for going "back to coal" — but he rejected that line of thought.

"No we don't. We absolutely don't," Kerry declared, adding that "we have to prevent a false narrative from entering into this or ... we are cooked."

Kerry served as Secretary of State during a portion of President Barack Obama's tenure in office. Kerry, who had previously spent more than two decades serving as a U.S. senator from the state of Massachusetts, lost the 2004 presidential election to incumbent Republican President George W. Bush.
