President Trump on Monday, was asked by a reporter on Air Force One if he would consider running for the vice-presidency in 2028.

Trump responded by saying he was allowed to do it but then shared he has no intention of doing so.

The Guardian provided full quotes from Trump’s remarks:

Donald Trump said on Monday morning that he would rule out running for the vice-presidency in the 2028 US election, an unorthodox approach that some of his supporters have floated to allow the Republican US president to serve a third term in the White House.

“I’d be allowed to do that,” Trump said, in an exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, the latest leg of a five-day trip to Asia which he hopes to cap with an agreement on a trade war truce with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping.

But he added: “I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that … It’s not – it wouldn’t be right.

The New York Post had more details on Trump’s latest comments on possibly running for a third term:

President Trump said Monday that he won’t run as Vice President JD Vance’s running mate to circumvent the Constitution’s two-term limit on the presidency, but said he is still interested in running again — musing about a potential 2028 face-off against New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Trump, 79, made the remarks when a reporter asked about his former chief strategist Steve Bannon’s claim that a secret plan might negate the 22nd Amendment’s term limit.

“I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever, it’s very terrible, I have my best numbers,” Trump said on Air Force One en route to Tokyo for meetings with Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Trump, whose approval rating is 45.1%, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, has repeatedly flirted with a final candidacy in what is widely seen as a way to avoid lame-duck status and troll Democrats, including with “Trump 2028” campaign hats.
