Watch Trump here:President Trump said Tuesday that his administration will expand drug strikes to land locations, including in Colombia, after defending the U.S. military attacks on vessels in the Caribbean near Venezuela.
“We’re going to start doing those strikes on land too,” Mr. Trump said at a meeting of his Cabinet officials. “The land is much easier, much easier and we know the routes they take. We know everything about them. We know where they live. We know where the bad ones live and we are going to start doing that very soon.”
While Mr. Trump didn’t offer much in the way of specifics, he said that cocaine manufacturing plants would be the likely targets of those strikes.
“Anybody that’s doing that and selling it into our country is subject to attack, not necessarily just Venezuela,” he said.
The president said Colombia could be a potential target because it has drug manufacturing facilities.
“I hear Colombia is making cocaine. They have cocaine manufacturing plants and then they sell us the cocaine,” he said.
Mr. Trump has previously said that he wants to widen U.S. military attacks against the drug cartels that fueled the deadly domestic opioid crisis. He has also talked about expanding military operations in Venezuela as part of a broader campaign to pressure a regime change against President Nicolas Maduro, sparking fears the U.S. could get into a conflict with Venezuela.
NBC News reported Hegseth addressed the recent strikes on Venezuela drug boats during the meeting:Trump:
The country of Colombia is making cocaine, they have cocaine manufacturing plants.
Then they sell us their cocaine, we appreciate that very much.

“I didn’t personally see survivors,” Hegseth told reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday. “The thing was on fire. It was exploded in fire and smoke. You can’t see it.”
He added, “This is called the fog of war.”
In September, U.S. forces conducted a strike on a boat in the Caribbean Sea suspected of smuggling drugs, then ordered a second strike after the first failed to kill all of the vessel’s occupants, one U.S. official and a source familiar with the Pentagon’s actions that day told NBC News.
The boat was carrying a total of 11 individuals, the Pentagon said at the time of the strike. Since then, the U.S. has conducted more than 20 strikes on purported drug vessels it says are carrying drugs from Venezuela, killing more than 80 people.
In response, bipartisan lawmakers in both the House and the Senate have started inquiries into the strikes, which critics have said could constitute a war crime.
Hegseth’s comments come as President Donald Trump and the White House have stepped in to defend him amid scrutiny over the attack. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday said that Hegseth authorized Adm. Frank Bradley, the Special Operations commander, to order the strikes.
