President Donald Trump has already done a lot to amplify the voices of alternative media sources as mainstream news outlets continue to see their cultural influence wane.

Forget traditional media exclusivity the Trump administration announced a new seat in the White House briefing room specifically for “new media.” Think podcasters, TikTok influencers, and YouTubers.

One bold move from recently confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth exposed just how entrenched legacy media had become within the Executive Branch.

As the Daily Mail reported:

Pete Hegseth has kicked out liberal legacy media outlets from the Pentagon press offices to make room for conservative organizations during his first week as defense secretary.

The New York Times, NBC News, NPR and Politico have been giving their marching orders to evacuate their office spaces inside the Pentagon by Valentine’s Day, a memo read.

In their place, three conservative outlets – the New York Post, One America News Network (OAN) and Breitbart News Network – and one progressive outlet, HuffPost, will move in for one year.

HuffPost, who does not have a Pentagon correspondent, did not ask for space inside the Pentagon, spokesperson Lizzie Gram told NBC News, but Gram remains enthusiastic.

‘If the Trump administration and Secretary Hegseth are interested in more hard-hitting coverage of their stewardship of the Defense Department from HuffPost, we are ready to deliver,’ Grams said.

New York Post will occupy The Times’ space, while OAN will take NBC’s office, Brietbart will occupy NPR’s residence, and HuffPost will move into Politico’s area.

Hegseth’s office implemented a rotating schedule for outlets to use the office space, which each rotation lasting one year. The unprecedent move was announced on Friday.

The move was met with enthusiasm from many Trump supporters:

A number of other moves during Hegseth’s first few days on the job have similar sparked praise:

Trump’s ability to so soundly defeat Kamala Harris in November was likely due, at least in small part, to his ability to bypass the mainstream media with interviews with podcasters and other alternative sources.

As HuffPost reported, that strategy was heavily influenced by his youngest son:

The campaign enlisted the help of Alex Bruesewitz, a 27-year-old Republican consultant, to present Donald Trump with a list of podcasters that aligned with the strategy.

When Bruesewitz met with Trump to pitch him the list, Time reported that the former president said, “Call Barron and see what he thinks and let me know.”

According to The Washington Post, which also reported on the exchange, Bruesewitz reached Barron Trump and got the green light to get his father to go on comedian Theo Von’s podcast.

A person briefed on the discussion told the Post that the 18-year-old said to Bruesewitz, “Oh yes, you should definitely do Theo Von. I watch it all the time. And then he says, ‘You should do Adin Ross next.’”
