After agreeing to a plea deal with the prosecution, a former Maryland mayor who posted revenge porn of his ex on Reddit communities dedicated to humiliation and racial degradation will not serve time in prison.
Andrew Bradshaw, the former mayor of Cambridge who resigned in January, was found guilty on Monday of five counts of disseminating revenge porn on the internet.
According to a plea deal offered by the state prosecutor’s office, the disgraced lawmaker will not have to serve time in prison.
Bradshaw was given a three-year supervised probation sentence and a $5,000 fine. He was also sentenced to pay the victim $750 in reparations and complete 100 hours of community service.
The former mayor had been charged with 50 counts of spreading revenge pornography, with a maximum sentence of 100 years in jail and a fine of $250,000.
Bradshaw shared nude images of a woman with whom he had previously been involved on Reddit after the relationship had ended.
Between April 3 and May 20, 2021, he posted nude pictures of his ex-girlfriend on Reddit forums with incendiary captions like, ‘The kind of body black men love,’ and, ‘I post my t** on reddit to get attention and to get off.’
When Bradshaw, a Republican, was elected mayor of Cambridge, around 2 hours east of Washington, DC, in January 2021, he became the city’s youngest mayor.
In the aftermath of Bradshaw’s court actions, Cambridge city commissioners moved to remove him from office. Bradshaw resigned voluntarily in January following a “tough period of self-reflection.”
Lajan Cephas, the president of the Commission, was named acting mayor of Cambridge. A special election will be held this year at an undisclosed period, according to the city.
‘I no longer have the confidence of my colleagues on the City Council as a result of the legal matter in which I have been embroiled over the past several months, nor have I been able to maintain the relationships with other local, state, and federal leaders necessary to move Cambridge forward at this time,’ he said in a statement.
‘Now, as we approach so many important crossroads for our city, I am unable to perform some of the tasks so important to ensure success for Cambridge.’
Bradshaw’s actions were illegal under Maryland’s Revenge Porn Statute, which prohibits “the nonconsensual distribution of a private visual representation of another that exposes their intimate body parts or depicts them engaged in sexual activity with the intent to harm, harass, intimidate, threaten, or coerce the person depicted.”
On May 14, 2021, the victim reported the posts to police, claiming that they were made without her permission and that Bradshaw was the only person to whom she provided the images.
Posts about sex, humiliation, degradation, and race were made on numerous subreddits, or dedicated forums. They came from accounts with the victim’s name and birthday in the username, making it possible for them to be linked to her.
The posts were traced back to an IP address that serves Bradshaw’s home, according to prosecutors.
Last year, State Prosecutor Charlton Howard said, “Using someone’s private photos without their agreement is a major breach of trust and invasion of privacy, and the power and breadth of the internet makes such a crime even more egregious.”
‘Our office is committed to protecting victims from those who abuse their positions of power and trust.’ Charging documents showed the language Bradshaw used in the racially-charged posts seen by investigators, which date to a period of just seven weeks between April 3 and May 20.
‘Chubby white girl looking for a [redacted] daddy to message with,’ one post read, along with a photo of the victim’s ‘intimate parts exposed.” F* a [redacted] for the 1st time last night- I’m still smiling this morning from the orgasms he gave me,’ Bradshaw also wrote, according to prosecutors.
Another post read: ‘I’ve been posting pics of my t* on reddit to get used by guys as their personal online slut.’
His office was raided in August, according to local news outlets, although the reason for the raid was unknown.
Bradshaw has lived in Cambridge his entire life and was elected as the city’s youngest mayor in January 2021.
He attended Pennsylvania State University, where he interned at Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s legislative office and wrote for the local newspaper.
He went to work for his family’s body shop after graduation.
