New details have been revealed about the Secret Service’s handling of former FBI Director James Comey’s notorious “86 47” post.

The day after Comey posted on social media calling for President Trump to be assassinated, Secret Service physically surveilled him and tracked his cellphone for his location.

According to a report by The NY Times, Former FBI Director James Comey, whose record has been marred by controversy, found himself under Secret Service surveillance after posting the infamous photo on Instagram in May of seashells arranged to spell “86 47,” a phrase some Trump allies interpreted as a threat against the president. The next day, law enforcement authorities tailed Comey and his wife as they drove from a North Carolina vacation through Virginia to their Washington-area home, a move typically reserved for serious threats.

This tailing operation, which included tracking Comey’s cellphone, came after Donald Trump Jr. accused Comey on social media of “casually calling for my dad to be murdered.” The “86 47” phrase, combining slang for dismissal with Trump’s designation as the 47th president, has been seen on protest signs and merchandise. Comey deleted the post, denying any violent intent and affirming his opposition to violence. The Secret Service interviewed him by phone that evening, but the tailing persisted.

While Secret Service was tracking Comey’s cellphone for updates on his location, law enforcement were stationed at his home, waiting to question him.

The New York Times reported:

Mr. Comey and his wife, Patrice, were tailed by the authorities as they drove from the North Carolina coast, where they had been vacationing, through Virginia to their home in the Washington area, the officials said, describing the details of the surveillance on condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a federal investigation.

At the same time, the Secret Service was receiving information showing the location of Mr. Comey’s phone while federal authorities were stationed at his home waiting for him to return, the officials said.

Unsurprisingly, the establishment media is up in arms over this, calling the Secret Service’s surveillance unlawful.

Last time I checked, threatening to assassinate the President of the United States was not exactly legal…

And, especially for a president who survived multiple assassination attempts, of course the Secret Service is going to take that seriously and do everything that can to protect him.

That’s literally their job.
