Elon Musk’s SpaceX launch site has just officially become a real city in Texas.

The people of a South Texas city (formerly known as Boca Chica) voted today in favor of reincorporating as the new city of Starbase, which Elon Musk had been wanting to do for a long time.

When the vote was called, it was overwhelmingly in favor of creating the new city. It was called at 173-4.

Even though ballots are still technically being counted, the tally was well past the majority requirement needed to incorporate.

NBC News reported:

Texas has a brand new city, and its name is Starbase.

A vote Saturday to decide whether to turn part of south Texas into a new city centered around Elon Musk’s SpaceX delivered a victory to the tech billionaire and his rocket company. As expected, the measure passed with broad support, paving the way for a newly incorporated city made up almost exclusively of SpaceX employees and people connected to the company.

The vote tally Saturday night was 212 in favor of incorporation and six against; only 143 votes were needed for the measure to pass.

“It’s officially statistically impossible for the measure to fail,” Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said. “Cameron County is about to have a new city.”

Musk celebrated the vote in a post on X Saturday night.

“Starbase, Texas Is now a real city!” he wrote.

Shortly after the vote, an X account for the new city was created.

“Becoming a city will help us continue building the best community possible for the men and women building the future of humanity’s place in space,” the account wrote in its first post, which was reposted to SpaceX’s official account.

Now that the vote has passed, commissioners in the county will canvass the results within two weeks, Garza said. A judge will then assign an order declaring the results of the election and the official incorporation of the new city.

The new city of Starbase covers about 1½ square miles at the southern tip of Texas, a coastal spot nestled against the Mexico border. The area is home to SpaceX headquarters, and it’s where the company builds its boosters and engines and launches its huge Starship rocket on test flights.

The New York Times also said:

Members of a South Texas community that has served as the hub of Elon Musk’s rocket launch company, SpaceX, voted on Saturday to formally establish a new city called Starbase, fulfilling one of Mr. Musk’s long-held dreams.

At the time the polls closed at 7 p.m., 173 out of 177 votes were in favor of incorporating the city of Starbase, according to Cameron County, which administered the vote.

There are 283 eligible voters, said Remi Garza, the elections administrator for the county. About 40 votes were left to be counted, Mr. Garza said, but the early vote tally was “well past” the majority requirement need to approve the incorporation.
