Hollywood is filled with self-righteous stars who look for any reason imaginable to spew invective against President Donald Trump.

And for director Chris Columbus, one grudge he’s been carrying for more than 30 years doesn’t seem to be getting any lighter over time.

He recently discussed Trump’s seven-second appearance in the 1992 film “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York,” which he described as an “albatross” for his career.

According to the Daily Wire:

“It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone,” Columbus lamented. “I can’t cut it. If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country. I’ll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I’ll have to go back to Italy or something.”

“Home Alone 2” followed up on the popularity of the first film. It showed the McAllister family taking a trip to Florida, only the youngest son, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), winds up by himself in New York City. He’s pursued by the same two burglars from the first film, Marv (Daniel Stern) and Harry (Joe Pesci).

“We screened the film in Chicago, and when that moment came onscreen the audience went crazy,” Columbus added. “They cheered and they cheered and they thought it was hilarious. I think I know a lot about comedy, but I don’t, obviously, because I never thought that was going to be considered hilarious.”
Plenty of critics piled on Columbus for his politically charged rhetoric:

What has changed about Trump since Home Alome 2 was released?

He hates it because it reminds everyone people loved Trump until they didn't–when he ran as a Republican.

You don’t change a 30+ year old classic film over a 2 second cameo. Trump owned the Plaza hotel when the film was made, that’s how he ended up there. Don’t change the past, because you’re a cry baby about the present.

It’s not the first time the director has griped about the scene, as The Wrap reported in late 2023:

Donald Trump fired back Wednesday at a resurfaced interview with “Home Alone 2” director Chris Columbus asserting that he “bullied his way into the movie.” The former president said that, in fact, he “didn’t want to do it,” but “Columbus and others were begging me to make a cameo appearance.”

Posting to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump recalled, “30 years ago (how time flies!) director Chris Columbus and others were begging me to make a cameo appearance in ‘Home Alone 2.’ They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy, and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history!”

Trump went on to applaud the film for being a Christmas classic, adding that he gets phone calls from fans “whenever it is aired.” He also believed that his seven seconds of screen time were critical to the 1992 sequel’s box office success.

“That little cameo took off like a rocket, and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmas time,” he wrote. “People call me whenever it is aired. Now, however, 30 years later, Columbus (what was his real name?) put out a statement that I bullied myself into the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. That cameo helped make the movie a success, but if they felt bullied, or didn’t want me, why did they put me in, and keep me there, for over 30 years? Because I was, and still am, great for the movie, that’s why!”
