The US military is bracing for likely retaliatory strikes from Iran following the strikes on it’s nuclear facilities, and Americans have been warned to be extra vigilant by the State Department.
Most of those alerts have come in the course of cautionary non-specific warnings to all Americans, particularly those traveling abroad.
Things just got a little more specific in Qatar just a short time ago — home of the largest US base in the Mideast.
Fox News is now reporting that a strike on the US base in Qatar is ‘imminent’:
That news comes on the heels of a less specific warning by the US Embassy in Qatar sent out a few hours ago to Americans living in Qatar.BREAKING: 'Imminent' threat of Iranian strike on US base in Qatar, sources tell Fox News![]()

Though that earlier alert referenced an “abundance of caution”, Iran’s vow to retaliate was obviously being taken seriously.
Not long after the shelter in place order went out, the Qatari airspace was also closed as was reported by Fox News:
And now within the last hour the possibility of a direct strike on Americans in Qatar is being reported to be much more certain. The U.S. Embassy in Qatar told Americans to shelter in place until further notice Monday and Qatar temporarily closed its airspace following the weekend’s attacks on Iran.
“The competent Qatari authorities announce the temporary suspension of air traffic in the country’s airspace, in order to ensure the safety of citizens, residents, and visitors,” Qatar’s foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that it would “not hesitate to take all necessary preventive measures within this context.”
The ministry promised to update the public as developments arise.
The embassy said it made the recommendation “out of an abundance of caution” but provided no other details. Qatar is home to Al Udeid Air Base, where approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers are deployed. The United Kingdom’s Qatar embassy issued a similar warning after the U.S.
Iran vowed to retaliate against the U.S. after American B-2 bombers dropped 14 bunker buster bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites.
“The criminal US must know that in addition to punishing its illegitimate and aggressive offspring, the hands of Islam’s fighters within the armed forces have been freed to take any action against its interests and military, and we will never back down in this regard,” Abdolrahim Mousavi, the new chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, warned in a statement.
While Iran is largely expected to launch a counterattack to the weekend’s bombings, Israeli strikes have taken out Iran’s missile launchers and depleted its stock of medium-range missiles.
The U.S. homeland, meanwhile, is under a “heightened threat environment” following the weekend’s strikes, including “low-level cyber attacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks.”
Here’s a breaking news clip that just came through from Fox News detailing the new warnings that an ‘imminent’ threat of attack now exists:

Not only does it house a huge contingent of American military personnel in a strategic location.
It is also able to support some of the US’s most advanced aircraft that require exceptionally long runways, and is strategically located for specific types of missions, as reported by Newsweek:
With such a strategic US military asset sitting just across the waters of the Persian Gulf — a mere few hundred miles from Iran’s border — a strike on Qatar would obviously be high on Iran’s hitlist of potential American targets.According to Reuters, the base has been placed on high alert, and the threat is linked to the possibility of an Iranian missile attack in response to the U.S. strikes on nuclear facilities on Saturday night.
Al Udeid Air Base, located southwest of Doha, Qatar, is the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East and a critical hub for American and coalition air operations across the region. Home to the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), U.S. Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT), and the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, the base supports missions in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and beyond. Its strategic location and massive 12,000-foot runway make it a key asset for aerial refueling, reconnaissance, and combat missions.
The base was established in the 1990s and expanded significantly after the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. It hosts thousands of U.S. and allied troops and houses advanced aircraft such as B-52 bombers, F-22 Raptors, and KC-135 Stratotankers. Al Udeid also plays a vital role in coordinating surveillance and drone operations. Its presence underscores the strong military partnership between the U.S. and Qatar.
There were reports days ago that the US had emptied much of the airbase, possibly in preparation for avoiding just this sort of scenario:
Those reports were never verified by the US military of the Trump Administration, and could just as easily been a ruse to give the Iranian targetters more questions than answers.Low-resolution satellite images of Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base show it is virtually empty, with no aircraft in its previously full parking areas
