Democratic Congresswoman Kim Schrier of Washington told The Hill that when it comes to the debate over abortion laws in various states, Republicans “conflate a heartbeat with a soul or with personhood.”
“I can tell you about a single heart cell, a myocardial cell, in a petri dish in a lab at the University of Washington that will beat,” Schrier said on Tuesday.
Schrier is the only woman doctor serving in the House and portrayed the science cited by advocates of “heartbeat bills,” which ban abortion once a heartbeat can be detected, as a “gimmick” by pro-life groups to push their preferred legislation.
The Hill's Buck Sexton, who hosts “Hill TV” asked Schrier when she believes a fetus becomes a person.
“Congress needs to be out of that decision,” Schrier replied.
This new battlefront has ramped up the debate over when life begins. Pro-life advocates reasonably say that from a legislative perspective, the detection of a heartbeat is a sensible and moral place to draw that line. Obviously, most pro-abortion leftists disagree.
Now a Democratic congresswoman appears to be saying that even if an unborn child has a heartbeat, it is somehow not fully human because it lacks a “soul.”
How do you quantify a “soul” in legal or practical terms? Isn't a heartbeat more substantial?

Schrier became the first Democrat to represent Washington's 8th Congressional District by beating Republican state senator Dino Rossi in 2018.

“Heartbeat bills” have been passed in Georgia, Louisiana, and Kentucky in recent months. The pro-abortion left has reacted in typical fashion, even boycotting states like Georgia for daring to attempt to protect the unborn once a heartbeat can be detected in a fetus.
