Cops stated Tuesday that a group of at least 17 gangs targeting Los Angeles’ wealthiest are to blame for the city’s recent string of ‘follow-home’ robberies.

‘In my 34 years in the LAPD, I have never seen this type of criminal behavior in such large groups coordinating to conduct attacks on unsuspecting citizens to take their property and/or vehicles,’ said Capt. Jonathan Tippet.

Tippet was named commander of the Follow Home Robbery Task Force in November, a section created to tackle the robberies, which have seen armed suspects shadow victims exiting ritzy boutiques, hotels, and restaurants before striking.

On November 23, the force, which consists of 18 investigators, was established.
A total of 221 follow-home robberies have been reported since then, with another 45 occurring before to the task force’s formation.

Tippet and other cops at Tuesday’s briefing chastised city laws for allowing two criminals detained by the task force in the last month to be released on the street while awaiting trial days after their crimes.

The briefing comes as the number of violent robberies and smash-and-grab thefts in Los Angeles has increased dramatically. Robberies have increased by roughly 18 percent year-to-date compared to 2021, while those with a firearm have increased by nearly 50 percent.

According to LAPD figures, assaults have increased by 4.4 percent, while violent crimes have increased by 7% overall.

‘We have seen countless individuals traumatized by having a gun pointed at them and (being) robbed,’ said Tippet.

‘Many others are dealing with the trauma and injuries from being tackled, kicked, beaten, punched and are pistol whipped to the head. ‘It’s a miracle that more deaths have not occurred,’ he added, referring to the two deaths that have come from the more than 100 incidents.

Tippet reported that 45 robberies fit the ‘follow home’ criteria in a four-week period from September to October. There were 39 more in November.

When the number of crimes increased and celebrities, including actor and former BET host Terrence Jenkins and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Dorit Kemsley, became victims, officers spotted a pattern and organized the unit, according to Tippet.

Tippet said during the conference that connections between the crimes included the use of several vehicles and multiple armed suspects working together to rob victims who had high-end vehicles and jewels.

Offenders often made off with luxury purses, diamond-encrusted watches, and other high-priced products, according to Tippet, which perps would then resell on the black market for a lower price.

Since then, the task team has made 24 arrests for 47 robberies, as well as 16 arrests for gun possession and six for attempted murder, according to the captain.

According to Tippet, the department has also arrested four people on murder charges in connection with the orchestrated attacks’ two homicides.

During that time, the force has also served 278 search warrants, with nearly 200 of them aimed at suspects’ social media accounts – which police believe gangbangers used to organize the heists – 35 for homes, and 20 for vehicles, according to Tippet.

The LAPD reported seven follow-home robberies in its most recent two-week period, which ended April 10, compared to only three in the two weeks prior, according to Tippet.

However, an upswing in recent weeks, including five robberies that fit the suspects’ MO in the last 48 hours, has detectives convinced that more work has to be done, in part because some detained suspects are being freed and reoffending while awaiting trial due to the city’s lenient bail regulation.

Tippet, who also supervises the department’s Robbery Homicide Division, admitted that he was “extremely upset” by the phenomena, which he described as “virtually unheard of” before last year.

The task force’s announcement comes as three men were arrested in Los Angeles as suspects in armed follow-home robberies that began in January. One of them was involved in eight separate follow-off robberies over a six-month period beginning last fall, during which he was released seven times due to the city’s lax criminal policies.

Matthew Adams, 18, was arrested for the seventh time in 2022 on March 31, accused of attacking two UCLA students outside one of the university’s dorms and stealing their expensive watches and an iPhone, totaling more than $145,000 in property, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department.

At least four more follow-home robberies in Hollywood, Burbank, and West L.A. have also been linked to Adams.
