Although “Monty Python” member John Cleese has long been known for his leftist political leanings, his recent comment about a top adviser to President Donald Trump was offensive even by his standards.

Cleese eventually deleted the X post targeting White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, but that didn’t stop critics from spreading screenshots and sharing their own thoughts about his statement.

Cleese’s post comes as reports have surfaced that the Trump administration is thinking of suspending habeas corpus.

Per, ABC27 News, “habeas corpus is Latin for ‘that you have the body.’”

According to the Cornell University School of Law, habeas corpus is Latin for “that you have the body.” Cornell says in the United States, federal courts can use habeas corpus to determine if a state’s prisoner detention is valid. The writ, or order, of habeas corpus is used to “bring a prisoner or other detainee (such as an institutionalized mental patient or illegal immigrant) before the court to determine if the person’s imprisonment or detention is lawful.”

When asked by a reporter about how President Donald Trump had talked “about potentially suspending habeas corpus to take care of the illegal immigration problem,” Miller explained that “the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in time of invasion,” according to ABC News.

Here’s how The Hill reported on Miller’s initial statement about habeas corpus:

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller said Friday that President Trump and his team are “actively looking at” suspending habeas corpus as part of the administration’s immigration crackdown.

“Well, the Constitution is clear — and that of course is the supreme law of the land — that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion,” Miller told reporters at the White House.

“So, it’s an option we’re actively looking at. Look, a lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not.”

A writ of habeas corpus compels authorities to produce an individual they are holding and to justify their confinement.

It’s been a key avenue migrants have used to challenge pending deportations under the Alien Enemies Act, a rarely-used 18th-century power Trump cited to deport Venezuelan nationals he’s accused of being gang members to a notorious megaprison in El Salvador.
