This was a class act.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw has revealed he missed his game on September 21 to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial service.

Shaw revealed that his connection with Charlie was through their Christian faith.

Charlie Kirk was notably a big Chicago Cubs fan.

The Chicago Sun-Times had more to report on Shaw’s honorable decision:

Two days after missing a game in Cincinnati to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial, Cubs rookie third baseman Matt Shaw said being among the tens of thousands who honored the controversial figure at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, was ‘‘meant to be.’’

As for any blowback — for his friendship with Kirk or for leaving his team during a critical closing stretch of the regular season — Shaw is ‘‘not concerned at all,’’ he said before the series opener Tuesday against the Mets at Wrigley Field.

‘‘My connection with Charlie was through our [Christian] faith,’’ Shaw said. ‘‘And that’s something that drives me every day, the reason why I’m able to do what I do every day, and that’s something I’m extremely thankful for. I know without my faith and without the many blessings I’ve been given in my life that I wouldn’t be here, be able to talk to you guys, able to help this team eventually go and win championships. That’s something I feel really, really blessed about, so whatever backlash comes is OK.’’

The 31-year-old Kirk, a conservative podcaster, founder of Turning Point USA and ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed Sept. 10 during a public appearance at a college in Utah. Shaw, 23, was scratched from the Cubs’ lineup that night in Atlanta. He and Kirk had become friends last offseason while living in the same apartment complex in Arizona and had remained in regular contact during the season, according to Shaw.

‘‘When that happened, a lot of emotions came over me,’’ Shaw said. ‘‘I didn’t foresee that happening. I don’t know how to describe everything that happened and how I was feeling, but I will say I was tearing up pretty good. I had a lot of [teammates] supporting me, and that will be something I’ll remember for my entire life.’’

Shaw called Kirk ‘‘one of the biggest Cubs fans I ever met’’ and said he received texts from the Arlington Heights native after every game.

Erika Kirk, Kirk’s widow, asked Shaw to attend the memorial, he said.

‘‘I felt as though it was something that was really important for me to do,’’ he said.

Mets Broadcaster Gary Cohen condemned Shaw for attending the funeral:

"I don't want to talk about any of the politics of it, but the thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency, really strikes me as weird."

The New York Post reported more on Cohen’s disgusting remarks:

Gary Cohen attempted to walk a fine line while taking issue with Cubs rookie Matt Shaw’s recent absence from the club.

Shaw got permission from the Cubs to miss Sunday’s game to attend the memorial service of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, but Cohen took issue with the fact that the rookie third baseman left the team in the middle of a playoff race.

The Cubs, who clinched a playoff spot last week, are sitting in the first wild-card spot in the National League.

Cohen attempted to sidestep the political aspects of the conversation when he broached the subject in the bottom of the fourth inning during Tuesday’s SNY broadcast of the game between the Mets and Cubs at Wrigley Field.

“I don’t want to talk about any of the politics of it, but the thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency, really strikes me as weird,” Cohen said.

Mets analyst and former first baseman Todd Zeile added that he thought it was “unprecedented” and “unusual” before adding later that what added to the controversy was that it wasn’t revealed why he wasn’t at the game “until after it came to issue.”

When Cohen asked if his status as a rookie played into the circumstances, Zeile said it would be unusual during his era (1989-2004) in the game, before noting that “there was no paternity leave, there was no bereavement leave” when he was a player.
